  • We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Environmental Health & Safety Manager to join our clients team in Roanoke, VA.

     

    The successful candidate will have the overall responsibility of safety and environmental programs.  This position is responsible for Developing and implementing safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental programs to ensure a compliant, safe, and incident-free work environment.  The ESH Manager will promote organization safety and continuous improvement by working with all departments to analyze current situations and recommend and drive improvements in addition to providing strategic direction and initiatives that address root causes while reducing corporate liabilities and costs.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    Responsible for assessing, developing, and conducting safety training for hourly and management employees at 4 locations, across 2 states.

    Monitors compliance to state OSHA standards, as well as state air quality requirements, the safe handling of hazardous materials, material safety data information, and other federal and local code enforcement requirements.

    Conduct plant safety and environmental audits.

    Coordinate the efforts of emergency disaster recovery response contractors, medical first aid responders and other safety related teams.

    Responsible for the safety and industrial hygiene plans, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with local, state, and Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.  Maintains a system for reporting, monitoring, and correcting safety problems.

    Responsible for environmental plans and policies and procedures to ensure compliance with local, State, and Federal environmental rules and regulations.  Maintains a system for reporting, monitoring, and correcting environmental problems.

    Oversees health & safety, environmental, and DOT audits for facility and recommend preventative measures.

    Development and execute safety training and incident prevention programs.

    Educate Management on Safety and Environmental best practices, prevention and how to work around/with hazardous substances.

    Responsible for compiling and submitting accident reports required by regulatory agencies and Workers’ Compensation cases, in conjunction with the workers’ compensation insurance carrier.

    Implements training programs which will increase proficiency in safe practices, promote safety consciousness, ensure environmental compliance, and advance continuous environmental improvement.

    Develops appropriate guidelines to ensure legal compliance and formulates recommendations for implementing applicable best practices consistent with the company’s strategic safety and environmental objective.

    Encourages management team to balance short-term demands with long-term benefits of strategic EHS programs; and inspires commitment and involvement with safety objectives and programs.

    Drive EHS initiatives, which reduce incident rates and environmental impacts while also reducing company costs; establishes order of priority for EHS initiatives and drives their implementation in cooperation with other managers and key personnel.

    Proactively seeks areas of opportunity for improvement; identifies root causes of accidents; recommends changes to workflow, equipment, or other process elements; and develops and implements support systems or processes to achieve safety objectives.

    Participate in the investigation of accidents, injuries, fires, and industrial health problems.  Cooperate in the preparation of material and evidence for Company use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.

    Collaborate with the Director of EHS to assist in reducing compensation costs, claims, and injuries through appropriate recommendations on programs, evaluations, investigations and advice.

    Communicate with the municipal, county, state, and federal agencies on EHS matters.

    Accompanies agency representatives when they inspect the facility.  Serve as the primary liaison between applicable regulatory and government agencies. Files and/or posts reports as required by external legal and convening agencies.

    Communicates with the Director of EHS for advice on regulations, contracts, licenses, etc.

    Communicates and celebrates successes to maintain and foster site-wide commitment to safety and continuous environmental improvement; and provide recommendations for corrective direction when EHS programs deviate from strategic plans and objectives.

    Develops the procedures and continues to monitor and train the personnel necessary for the handling of hazardous substances and disposition of hazardous waste.

    Formulates, maintains, and executes emergency plans and responds to safety and employee emergencies.

    Ensures all significant near misses, injuries, and safety events are investigated and abatement measures implemented.

    Monitors and controls industrial hygiene, which relates to the long-term effects of factors such as chemical exposure, noise, lighting, heat, and humidity. Manages hazardous and universal waste storage and disposal in compliance with all applicable regulations.

    Monitors activities where accidents could occur, halting any operation or activity that constitutes an imminent hazard to personnel or equipment.

    Conduct risk assessment audits.

    Reports safety statistics to Management.

    Other duties as assigned

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Demonstrated competency in fire safety, emergency preparedness, HazCom, facility audits and safety management.

    Ability to work independently in planning and implementing responsibilities.

    Organized and can prioritize a high volume of work.

    Excellent oral and written communication skills

    Must be able to work outside normal business hours and travel as needed.

     

     EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

    Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Safety or other related disciplines or 5 years environmental health and safety experience in chemical distribution or manufacturing or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Safety certifications are a plus.

    Solid technical background in Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene principles, manufacturing processes, and engineering control measures.

    Extensive knowledge of OSHA, DEQ, DOT and EPA regulatory requirements in a manufacturing environment.

    This position requires a valid driver’s license for business travel.

     

    WORK LOCATION AND SCHEDULE:

    Roanoke office, 8:00am-5:00pm, Monday through Friday

    25% travel required.

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee often works in outside weather conditions.

    The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions and vibration.

    The employee is required to stand and walk in the production facility, walking outside and sitting at a desk.

    Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.

    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    This job operates in a professional office environment frequently.

    This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

    There may be high background noise levels at times.

     

     COMMUNICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

    Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

    Ability to communicate effectively with regulatory authorities, government officials, major customers, and senior executives.
