Heavy Equipment Operator operates heavy equipment or machinery, such as a tractor, bulldozer, backhoe, or excavator, for the purposes of construction, demolition, or excavation. Prepares equipment and conducts routine inspections prior to operation to ensure it is safe and in working condition. Being a Heavy Equipment Operator identifies and addresses potential hazards and adheres to all safety protocols and regulations. May be responsible for scheduling minor repairs and conducting routine maintenance like cleaning and lubricating. Additionally, Heavy Equipment Operator requires a high school diploma. May require State License. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Heavy Equipment Operator independently performs a wide range of complex duties under general guidance from supervisors.     Heavy Equipment Operator - Facilities

    Major Responsibilities:
    1. Operates and monitors performance of the heavy construction type equipment, such as dozers, loaders, scrapers, off-road trucks, graders etc., with minimal supervision.

    2. Performs routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment operated with minimal supervision.

    3. Monitors certain process operations as directed by supervisor.

    4. Responsible for housekeeping in assigned units.

    5. Responsible for observing safe work practices.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    1. Requires sustained mental attention regarding correct process adjustments necessary for operating heavy equipment.

    2. Heavy Equipment training such as is offered by vocational-technical schools or privately operated, independent vocational school.

    3. Spatial discrimination; eye-hand-foot coordination; manual dexterity; ability to follow written and oral instructions; generally good physical condition.

    Education and Experience:
    1. Two years of experience in operation of heavy construction type equipment.

    2. Requires a valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License Class A

    3. Must obtain a tanker endorsement within six months following employment.

    4. Must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.

    Environmental Factors, Activity Levels and Equipment

    This position requires moderate physical exertion with daily lifting requirements up to 25 pounds. Working conditions include exposure to weather and odor. Equipment used includes dozers, loaders, dump trucks, fuel truck, backhoes, graders, air compressors, high-pressure washers and other miscellaneous equipment.
