Heavy Equipment Operator operates heavy equipment or machinery, such as a tractor, bulldozer, backhoe, or excavator, for the purposes of construction, demolition, or excavation. Prepares equipment and conducts routine inspections prior to operation to ensure it is safe and in working condition. Being a Heavy Equipment Operator identifies and addresses potential hazards and adheres to all safety protocols and regulations. May be responsible for scheduling minor repairs and conducting routine maintenance like cleaning and lubricating. Additionally, Heavy Equipment Operator requires a high school diploma. May require State License. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Heavy Equipment Operator independently performs a wide range of complex duties under general guidance from supervisors.     Summary

    Responsible for the proper handling of sand and gravel materials, and for the safe and proper care, operation, and maintenance of equipment assigned to the Heavy Equipment Operator.

    Functional Responsibilities

    Ø Exhibit a strong work ethic with the ability to take direction and work in a team setting and independently.

    Ø Adhere to Permian Basin Materials Code of Conduct and company policies.

    Ø Effectively operate all types of aggregate equipment including loaders, backhoes, blades, scrapers, and dozers according to manufacturer guidelines.

    Ø Load rock crushing machinery, dump trucks, trailers, and pickups with the proper amount of requested material.

    Ø Learn site aggregate materials to be able to differentiate between the products to keep them in correct and orderly locations.

    Ø Maintain pit traffic flow by directing all internal and external traffic in such a way as to have a safe, efficient traffic flow.

    Ø Always use radios properly keeping the Manager informed of all relevant information and problems.

    Ø Properly follow company, OSHA, and MSHA safety procedures and promote the company safety program.

    Ø Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or needed repairs to the supervisor.

    Ø Thoroughly clean interior and exterior of the equipment as scheduled or instructed.

    Ø Perform general cleanup of equipment, yard, and buildings.

    Ø Comply with all Safety, Health, Environmental and other Company policies and procedures.

    Ø Wear protective clothing and equipment as necessary to include hearing protection, dust masks, safety glasses, boots, harnesses and other clothing as required.

    Ø Perform other functions and duties as required or directed.

    EXPERIENCE/TRAINING/CERTIFICATIONS

    Ø High School diploma or equivalent required

    Ø One year of heavy equipment operation experience required

    PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Ø Candidate must be drug free.

    Ø Position requires moderately strenuous physical work.

    Ø Must be able to:
    o Lift and carry up to 40 pounds from floor to 3’ – 6’ occasionally,

    o Push or pull up to a maximum force of 100 pounds occasionally,

    o Climb in and out of equipment 50 times per day,

    o Climb up and down ladders occasionally,

    o Sit or stand for extended periods of time,

    o Use hands, fingers, and feet to operate and/or service heavy construction machinery and concrete mixers and haul trucks,

    o Travel safely while walking and while operating heavy machinery and/or trucks over uneven terrain, roads, and pavement,

    o See, hear, and respond to verbal, visual, and written instructions and to moving heavy construction machinery,

    o Wear proper protective equipment including hard hat, safety glasses, high visibility clothing, steel-toed boots, and gloves,

    o Observe all company Safety policies on company premises and while operating heavy construction machinery,

    o Continually work in extreme hot and cold weather conditions,

    o Work safely in wet, muddy, and slippery conditions occasionally,

    Ø Environment will vary from outdoors with varying noise levels and vibrations associated with construction equipment, and exposure to building materials, dust, and dirt at operating sites to a normal office environment.
