Heavy Equipment Operator jobs in Portland, ME
Heavy Equipment Operator operates heavy equipment or machinery, such as a tractor, bulldozer, backhoe, or excavator, for the purposes of construction, demolition, or excavation. Prepares equipment and conducts routine inspections prior to operation to ensure it is safe and in working condition. Being a Heavy Equipment Operator identifies and addresses potential hazards and adheres to all safety protocols and regulations. May be responsible for scheduling minor repairs and conducting routine maintenance like cleaning and lubricating. Additionally, Heavy Equipment Operator requires a high school diploma. May require State License. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Heavy Equipment Operator independently performs a wide range of complex duties under general guidance from supervisors. Has gained full proficiency in a broad range of activities related to the job. To be a Heavy Equipment Operator typically requires 5-7 years of related experience. (Copyright 2024 Salary.com)

Responsibilities
The City of Public Works Department is seeking a skilled operator of heavy equipment and Class B Trucks to perform earthwork, road construction and repair, paving, maintenance of roads and parking lots, and other projects related to a Public Works operation, including activities associated with winter snow operations and the solid waste facility.
Requirements
Qualified candidates will possess excellent skills in the operation of heavy snow removal tasks related to Public Works operations.
Ø Front-end loaders, street sweepers, rollers, and loader backhoes.
Ø Small hand operated equipment at times
Ø You may be required to perform manual labor as required
Ø High school diploma or equivalent
Ø Must possess a valid Maine Commercial Drivers License class A or B with an excellent driving record
Ø Previous experience with winter operations is desirable
Ø Applicants must reside within 30 road miles of the Augusta Public Works garage
Ø Overtime and non-standard hours in the winter and at other times will be required.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $21.48 - $26.69 per hour
