Heavy Equipment Operator operates heavy equipment or machinery, such as a tractor, bulldozer, backhoe, or excavator, for the purposes of construction, demolition, or excavation. Prepares equipment and conducts routine inspections prior to operation to ensure it is safe and in working condition. Being a Heavy Equipment Operator identifies and addresses potential hazards and adheres to all safety protocols and regulations. May be responsible for scheduling minor repairs and conducting routine maintenance like cleaning and lubricating. Additionally, Heavy Equipment Operator requires a high school diploma. May require State License. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Heavy Equipment Operator independently performs a wide range of complex duties under general guidance from supervisors.   • We are currently accepting application to fill ten (10) Extra-Help Heavy Equipment Operator positions at the Tajiguas Landfill. The position will be involved in the operations of the Anaerobic Digester Facility (ADF) and the Composting Management Unit (CMU).

    NOTE: **Civil Service Rule (CSR) 905 Extra-Help Appointments. An extra-help appointment is defined as an appointment made to a non-regular, non-permanent position established on a temporary basis to meet peak loads, unusual work situations, seasonal and recurrent work, intermittent assignments, or emergencies. 

    THE POSITION: Under general supervision, performs skilled work operating heavy equipment in the maintenance and construction of roads, public works or flood control facilities; leads maintenance staff as needed; performs related duties as required.Operates heavy construction equipment including, but not limited to, motor graders, loaders, bulldozers, excavators, scrapers, cranes, steel rollers and chip spreaders on various land-fill, road and flood control projects; performs minor maintenance and repair of equipment; and may act as lead worker over maintenance crews. Specific duties include assignments listed below:

    Solid Waste Disposal: Cuts, slopes, and grades hillsides and solid waste landfill sites; fills, packs, and levels refuse to established grade; and may operate diesel tractor-trailer combination on an intermittent basis.
    1. Two (2) years of experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment; OR,
    2. One (1)  year of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Maintenance Worker II with Santa Barbara County, including the operation of heavy construction equipment; OR,
    3. A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
    Possession of a valid California Class A Driver’s License is required for most positions. Those positions assigned to off-road equipment operations may require a valid California Class C Driver’s License.

    Appointees to those positions requiring a Class A license will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs prior to beginning work; once on the job, incumbents will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis.

    Knowledge of: mechanical operation of various types of heavy diesel and gas powered construction equipment; heavy construction practices.

    Ability to: operate, maintain and service equipment; learn and apply departmental procedures; follow written and oral instructions; work well with others.Application Procedure: Interested applicants should complete the questionnaire and submit it along with a resume and cover letter to the Public Works contact listed below.     Disaster Service Worker: Pursuant to Governmental code section 3100, all employees with the County of Santa Barbara are declared to be disaster service workers subject to such disaster service. Activities as may be assigned to them by their superiors or by law.
