Heavy Equipment Operator operates heavy equipment or machinery, such as a tractor, bulldozer, backhoe, or excavator, for the purposes of construction, demolition, or excavation. Prepares equipment and conducts routine inspections prior to operation to ensure it is safe and in working condition. Being a Heavy Equipment Operator identifies and addresses potential hazards and adheres to all safety protocols and regulations. May be responsible for scheduling minor repairs and conducting routine maintenance like cleaning and lubricating. Additionally, Heavy Equipment Operator requires a high school diploma. May require State License. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Heavy Equipment Operator independently performs a wide range of complex duties under general guidance from supervisors. JOB SUMMARY: Operates one or more types of highway equipment, especially snow plow equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with the maintenance and repair of Town roads, highways, parks and other facilities and perform any other job related duties that might be requested by the Highway Superintendent. Applicant should be aware that all Highway Department employees are subject to being on call and reachable due to the nature of the department’s operations. (ie: snow storms, ice storms, flooding, windstorms). Must be able to report to work within 35 minutes when called in.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS: One year of experience in the operation of specialized or heavy motor equipment; or two years of experience in the operation of some type of automotive equipment or construction equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Required to have a NYS Commercial Driver’s License or must successfully receive a NYS Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of employment.
