Heavy Equipment Operator operates heavy equipment or machinery, such as a tractor, bulldozer, backhoe, or excavator, for the purposes of construction, demolition, or excavation. Prepares equipment and conducts routine inspections prior to operation to ensure it is safe and in working condition. Being a Heavy Equipment Operator identifies and addresses potential hazards and adheres to all safety protocols and regulations. May be responsible for scheduling minor repairs and conducting routine maintenance like cleaning and lubricating. Additionally, Heavy Equipment Operator requires a high school diploma. May require State License. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Heavy Equipment Operator independently performs a wide range of complex duties under general guidance from supervisors.   • The purpose of this position is to operate and maintain all equipment as well as lead and assist crews in a variety of construction and maintenance work. This is accomplished by operating heavy equipment, leading a crew, scheduling work tasks, maintaining equipment, ensuring equipment and materials are sufficient, and preparing a safe work environment. Other duties include assisting other departments with miscellaneous projects and operational support. 
    • Operate remote control mowers, tractors, slope mowers, backhoes, trac hoes, excavators, loaders, skid steers and dump trailer. 
    • Operate a low boy trailer and in-loading and off-loading equipment.
    • Fasten chains or binders to secured equipment on trailer during transit and deliver equipment to various jobsites.  
    • Perform daily pre-tripping vehicle and record daily task. 
    • Operate heavy equipment to complete various tasks involving the construction, maintenance and repair of storm water infrastructure. Safely excavate down to the infrastructure for repairs; safely excavate to grade and maintain grade while trenching for new line installation and/or structure construction.  
    • Maintain the safe and efficient operation of equipment by completing regular maintenance, reporting equipment failures, and repairing or replacing worn or damaged parts.
    • Perform operational support by training crew members, attending meetings, assisting in storm clean up, leading and overseeing crew members, and attending certification classes. 
    Education & Experience Requirements:
    High School Diploma or GE and  minimum (3) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of light and heavy equipment.
    or
    High School Diploma or GE and  (1) year of experience, and training certificate from truck driving school program. 

    Other Requirements: 

    • Must have a Class A CDL at time of hire.  Must have at least 1 year of safe truck driving experience. Ability to take instructions and work independently in a safe manner, have good communication skills and the ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.  (City of Wilmington compensates for retaining certifications) 

    • Must possess a thorough knowledge in the proper operation of the following equipment: excavator, backhoe, loader, roller, tamps, saws, mixers, and small hand tools.

    • Must be able to use and understand a grade rod.

    • Knowledge of traffic control devices and how to properly set up and close off work area.

    • This position is considered essential and will be required to work in the event of inclement weather and other natural disasters such as hurricanes, winter storms and flooding.

      Notes:  The selected candidate will be required to complete a driving history check, a post-offer drug screen and P.O.E.T. (post offer evaluation test).

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Exerting over 100 lbs. occasionally, 50-100 lbs. frequently, or up to 20-50 lbs. constantly

    WORKING CONDITIONS: This position generally works outdoors.
