Heavy Equipment Operator operates heavy equipment or machinery, such as a tractor, bulldozer, backhoe, or excavator, for the purposes of construction, demolition, or excavation. Prepares equipment and conducts routine inspections prior to operation to ensure it is safe and in working condition. Being a Heavy Equipment Operator identifies and addresses potential hazards and adheres to all safety protocols and regulations. May be responsible for scheduling minor repairs and conducting routine maintenance like cleaning and lubricating. Additionally, Heavy Equipment Operator requires a high school diploma. May require State License. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Heavy Equipment Operator independently performs a wide range of complex duties under general guidance from supervisors. Must have a Class A CDL at time of hire. Must have at least 1 year of safe truck driving experience. Ability to take instructions and work independently in a safe manner, have good communication skills and the ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Must possess a thorough knowledge in the proper operation of the following equipment: excavator, backhoe, loader, roller, tamps, saws, mixers, and small hand tools.
Must be able to use and understand a grade rod.
Knowledge of traffic control devices and how to properly set up and close off work area.
This position is considered essential and will be required to work in the event of inclement weather and other natural disasters such as hurricanes, winter storms and flooding.
Notes: The selected candidate will be required to complete a driving history check, a post-offer drug screen and P.O.E.T. (post offer evaluation test).
