Position Summary and Responsibilities
Work involves the building and repair of masonry structures composed of brick, tile, stone, block and other materials.
Responsibilities:
- Point and repair masonry on exterior and interior of structures, including landscape site walls.
- Fill expansion joints with the appropriate caulking materials.
- Mix and apply plastering material to walls and ceilings, tape sheetrock and repair damaged sheetrock walls.
- Employ a wide variety of hand and power tools including hoists, drills, precision measuring instruments and electronic devices.
- Coordinate with the Campus Architect to ensure the historical integrity of properties through application of masonry techniques and detailed cosmetic repairs.
- Replace or reset existing loose stone or bricks on buildings or site walls.
- Perform all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with established Vassar College and departmental policies and procedures.
- Responsible for communication and working effectively with other trades.
- Perform other duties as assigned to assist the department in obtaining and maintaining its mission.
Qualifications
- Minimum of five years experience as a mason and plasterer with significant experience on historic structures.
- Knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in mason trade.
- Must possess a valid New York State drivers license.
- Ability to work on heights and on all ladders and scaffolding. Ability to communicate effectively in English, including understanding, speaking, reading, and writing is required.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering and architectural drawings and documents preferred but not required.
- Must be able to lift and carry at least 75 pounds.
- Must be able to perform repeated bending, squatting, stooping, pushing and pulling.
- Must be able to stand and walk for a prolonged period of time.
- Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- May require overtime.
