  • Overview

    The Summer Patrol works under the direction of the Patrol Director to execute daily operations and associated safety initiatives within the bike park, including park opening and closing, wayfinding and signage, trail clearing and maintenance, emergency medical response, mountain rescue, lift evacuation, risk management, wildlife encounter response, and accident investigations. Additionally, Summer Patrol is responsible for maintaining supplies and infrastructure for Winter Operations, including work projects in the alpine, light construction, and patrol facilities maintenance.

    Responsibilities

    • Adhere to the Big Sky Resort Employee Handbook and the Big Sky Summer Patrol Manual
    • Assist with BSR’s mission to Consistently Create Exceptional Experiences for Our Guests.
    • Patrol assigned areas and provide patrol presence on the mountain including enforcing safe biking policies
    • Assist with terrain openings and closures
    • Identify potential hazards and take appropriate actions to mitigate accordingly
    • Trail maintenance including, but not limited to marking hazards, raking trails, and maintaining signage and boundaries
    • Provide guest service by answering questions regarding terrain and providing information about lift openings and closures in a polite and friendly manner
    • Promote safe riding
    • Enforce the Mountain Bike Responsibility Code and Resort policies with guests and employees
    • Perform rescues within the ski area boundary including technical rescues and lift evacuations
    • Respond to injured or distressed hikers and bikers
    • Maintain mountain awareness and communication with guests and other departments
    • Participate in ongoing on-the-job training
    • Conduct or assist with the evacuation of aerial lifts
    • Investigate accidents and/or hazardous conditions on the mountain and in other areas owned or managed by Big Sky Resort
    • Keep patrol facilities neat, clean, and orderly
    • Safe and responsible use of hand tools, power tools, chainsaws, light and heavy equipment operation.
    • Safe and proficient use of all variety of work vehicles on every type of mountain terrain including, mountain trails, service roads, municipal roads, and undeveloped mountain terrain.
    • Perform routine maintenance checks on equipment and keep shared equipment in good working condition. The following should be inspected and documented daily: medical gear, work vehicle and UTV condition, bike maintenance, technical ropes and high angle gear.
    • Complete other duties as assigned in a safe and timely manner

    Qualifications

    • Current Montana EMT license, NREMT certification, and Healthcare Provider CPR certification.
    • Advanced mountain biking ability (The Patrol management team shall be the sole judge of such ability.)
    • Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions
    • Physical strength and stamina to work in mountainous outdoor environment
    • Ability to bike/walk/sit for hours each day
    • Ability to work long hours (shifts generally run 10 hours/day, 4 days/week)
    • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and carry up to 40 pounds
    • Positive attitude and ability to work on a team
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Willingness and ability to learn new job-related skills
    • Ability to complete jobs accurately while working independently

    Additional Skills and Qualifications:

    • Proficiency with technical rescue and lift evacuation techniques
    • Flexible thinking and problem-solving skills – the ability to adapt methods to meet new requirements while exercising good judgement and adhering to Big Sky Resort policies
    • Ability to operate a chainsaw
