    Job Title: Shop Foreman Mechanic

    Reports To: Highway Superintendent

    FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

    Pay:  $27.55 - $36.14 per hour

    Work week four ten hours days May 1 to November 1.

    Five eight hours days November 1 to May 1.

    Fourteen paid holidays per year.

     

    SUMMARY

    Under the direct supervision of the Highway Superintendent, and general supervision of the Assistant Superintendent, the Shop Foreman Mechanic is responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled mechanical work in maintenance of all County equipment and vehicles.

    *Must be available 24/7 if needed.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following, but are not limited to:

    • Perform welding, fabrication, and repairs to highway equipment and vehicles.
    • Maintain maintenance records for all highway equipment and vehicles.
    • Repair and maintain all County equipment and vehicles.
    • Provide supervision and direction to other County employees performing maintenance related tasks.
    • Use test diagnostic equipment to ensure equipment is in working order.
    • Operate payloaders, trucks, scrapers, motor graders, and tractors as needed.
    • Plan and coordinate on work schedule, and time management.
    • Maintain inventory and part records.
    • Order, pick-up and deliver parts, supplies, and equipment as needed by the Highway Department and other authorized County personnel.
    • Maintain shop in a neat and orderly manner.

    SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Serve as Safety Coordinator.
    • Perform duties in a manner consistent with safe practices.
    • Wear Personal Protective Equipment when required.
    • Attend meetings and seminars as assigned.
    • Perform other such duties and functions as deemed necessary

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS:

    •    High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certification and two-year degree in Diesel Mechanics program.
    •    Minimum of two (2) years mechanic experience and/or a combination of education and experience may be acceptable.
    •    The ability to drive trucks, and operate light/heavy equipment, and tools associated with construction.
    •    Basic knowledge of procedures, techniques, and standards applicable to highway and roadway maintenance and construction.
    •     Be proficient in the use of a variety of shop tools, welding, and the operation of machine shop equipment.
    •     Ability to read and comprehend Tech manuals, blueprints, and written procedures.
    •     Must be able to work without direct supervision.
    •    Ability to work well with others and get along with the general public.

     

    EXAMINATION, TESTING, AND CERTIFICATION

    • Must possess a valid South Dakota Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
    • Must possess a valid social security number.
    • Must successfully pass post-offer Drug and/or Alcohol testing and random DOT Drug and/or Alcohol testing as requested.
    • Complete all state required training/exams/certifications.
    • Other such exams as deemed appropriate and necessary by the County.
