Histology Technician receives and prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures and pathologist review. Performs histological procedures including accessioning, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining. Being a Histology Technician maintains accurate tissue and slide records. Cleans and maintains instruments and work areas. Additionally, Histology Technician complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires an associate degree in biology, related science, or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnician certification (HT). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technician's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. General Technical Duties:
Embedding: Must be able to embed tissues of varying size and type at a consistent and steady pace.
Microtomy: Must be able to cut biopsies, excisions, decalcified tissue, as well as large fatty tissues at a consistent and steady pace. Sections must be adequate for pathologist evaluation.
Staining: Must be able to perform H&E staining and special stains by the methods used at Celligent Diagnostics.
IHC/ISH: Must be able to perform immunohistochemistry and In situ hybridization using the methodology at Celligent Diagnostics. Must demonstrate an understanding of the “mechanics” of Immunohistochemistry and In situ hybridization. Research and Develop new antibodies and probes to be used.
Tissue Processing: Must be able to perform tissue processing according to CLIA 88 guidelines.
Tissue accessioning and set-up: Be able to set tissue specimens in numerical order and number properly with accurate double checks to ensure that patient safety is met.
Troubleshooting: Must be able to identify basic problems that can occur during the above technical areas and be able to solve them and document in necessary.
Microscopy: Must be able to operate a microscope and be able to view slides for adequacy and accuracy.
CAP Inspection: Must be able to participate in ongoing CAP compliance program. This includes being able to assist in the review of CAP questions and making sure that every aspect of a question is followed. Be able to develop new policies and procedures as needed for the ongoing processes at Celligent Diagnostics.
Workflow: Must be able to follow the established workflow guidelines and be able to alter them when necessary to meet courier route deadlines.
Description of Record – Keeping and Clerical Duties: Patient demographics (Sunquest). Specimen accessioning (Copath). Printing of cassettes and slides (Shurmark system). Internet and e-mail (Celligent computer system). Specimen electronic tracking (Gajema). Retrieval of scanned documents (Paperflow scanning system). Quality Control – Documentation of controls used throughout the lab. Filing – File blocks, slides and paperwork for future retrieval of the specimen or information. Inventory – Able to keep a reasonable supply on hand and know when to reorder.
Additional Job Duties: Must demonstrate professionalism at all times. Must think in a customer-oriented manner. Must be able to communicate effectively with pathologists about any histology related issue and cooperate in problem resolution. Must be able to perform any other task that may be assigned either temporally or permanently by the histology supervisor. Maintain compliance with all regulations and accreditation standards.
Requirements
Education and Training Requirements:
· High School diploma is required.
· HT/HTL certification is required.
· Two years of relevant experience is required.
· QIHC is a plus.
