Histology Technician receives and prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures and pathologist review. Performs histological procedures including accessioning, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining. Being a Histology Technician maintains accurate tissue and slide records. Cleans and maintains instruments and work areas. Additionally, Histology Technician complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires an associate degree in biology, related science, or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnician certification (HT). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technician's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. The Histology Technician prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by pathologists under the direct supervision of a pathologist or histology technologist. Responsibilities include frozen sections, paraffin mounts, cytologic preparations and stains related to each function. The Histology Technician determines if surgical and cytology specimens are adequate and requests additional specimens if necessary. He/she performs routine maintenance on instruments as directed.
The qualified candidate will possess the following:
A. Education/Experience
1. High school diploma or GED from an accredited institute required with a minimum of two years of experience in histopathology - OR
2. Associate's degree in biology or related field from an accredited institute with a minimum of one year of experience in histopathology
B. Licensure/Certification
1. Registered HT, ASCP or equivalent, or eligible
