Histology Technician receives and prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures and pathologist review. Performs histological procedures including accessioning, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining. Being a Histology Technician maintains accurate tissue and slide records. Cleans and maintains instruments and work areas. Additionally, Histology Technician complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires an associate degree in biology, related science, or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnician certification (HT). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technician's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Biological Science degree desired, but not required, will train the right candidate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
1. Performs routine histopathology procedures.
a. Completes surgical pathology. This includes identification, embedding, cutting, mounting and H&E staining. (in/outpatient, outpatient, doctors' offices and other hospitals).
b. Accurately identifies and embeds in the correct cassette all tissue specimens to ensure proper patient diagnosis.
c. Performs the cutting and mounting of each tissue specimen to acceptable standards per pathologist and procedure manual on a regular basis.
d. Performs H&E staining and cover slipping for all tissue specimens by noon of each day with minimal re-cuts.
2. Performs special histochemical procedures.
a. Completes special histochemical procedures; special staining.
b. Prepares frozen section (stat) for immediate diagnostic interpretation by pathologist and maintains quality assurance data.
3. Performs cytology preparation for immediate cytological adequacy examinations (Diff-Quick stain).
a. Including identification, appropriate processing.
b. Logs in all specimens accurately.
c. Accurately identifies and processes in the correct manner to ensure proper patient diagnosis.
d. Stains each specimen according to protocol
4. Assists at bedside for bone marrow aspirate and biopsy collection. Processes bone marrow aspirate clot sections, smears and biopsies.
5. Maintains a quality histology and cytology section (Immediate cytologic adequacy exam only).
a. The histotech maintains histology and cytology section supplies, safety, preventive maintenance and files.
b. Maintains and performs send-out cases to referral facilities at request of pathologist or patient.
c. Orders all needed supplies by Friday each week.
d. Checks in all supplies and labels with appropriate sticker and/or hazardous materials sticker as received.
e. Utilizes computer inventory control system according to procedure.
f. Demonstrates ongoing knowledge of safety rules, safety devices and hazardous chemicals used in histology and the lab by annual review of Safety Policies and required education.
g. Maintains current filing system for retrieval of data for comparisons with currently sent cases as needed.
h. Correlates preventative maintenance with other lab sections and /or participates in research and purchase of new equipment
6. Meets CLIA standards for high complexity testing and performs tissue grossing on selected specimens with the Pathologist’s direction and oversight.
a. Including identification, appropriate processing.
b. Logs in all specimens accurately.
c. Dictates findings for inclusion on the final report.
d. Accurately identifies and processes in the correct manner to ensure proper patient diagnosis.
