Histology Technician receives and prepares tissue specimens for routine and special procedures and pathologist review. Performs histological procedures including accessioning, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining. Being a Histology Technician maintains accurate tissue and slide records. Cleans and maintains instruments and work areas. Additionally, Histology Technician complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires an associate degree in biology, related science, or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnician certification (HT). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technician's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. JOB SUMMARY:
Hours: Monday-Friday 8:30pm-5:00am
Histology is an essential component to the art and science of pathology. The histology laboratory contributes a valuable service to help pathologists provide patient diagnoses. Information gained through microscopic evaluation of tissue slides prepared by histology technicians allows a pathologist to either identify or dismiss disease. The preparatory steps taken to ensure a quality diagnosis are key to this relationship.
A variety of procedures are performed to include embedding in paraffin, sectioning, staining and mounting tissue on slides.
Incumbents must demonstrate skill and knowledge of all histologic procedures, including special stains, immunohistochemical stains and equipment utilized. Incumbent must work as a team member within the laboratory. Incumbent regularly performs routine histological procedures. A departmental procedure manual is available and the Histology Manager is available in most cases for assistance in special or unusual cases. Incumbent must make decisions regarding adjustment of staining procedures for certain tissues and special requested stains.
