  • Overview:
    The Histology Specialist performs various histology techniques to prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination. This role involves operating a microtome and cryostat to mount tissues on slides, performing tissue searches using immunohistochemistry (IHC), embedding formalin-fixed tissues into paraffin blocks, and manufacturing cell line and tissue microarrays using a microarrayer. The Histology Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring accurate sample preparation, maintaining quality control, and supporting research and development activities.

    Responsibilities & Duties

    • Slide Preparation:The Histology Specialist operates a microtome and cryostat to cut thin sections of tissues and mount them on slides. Ensure proper sectioning techniques, adherence to protocols, and accurate labeling of slides for Quality Control/R&D use and control slide sales.
    • Tissue Search and Identification:Using immunohistochemistry (IHC), the Histology Specialist performs tissue searches, applying specific antibodies and stains to accurately identify tissue blocks to be used as controls.
    • Paraffin Embedding:The Histology Specialist embeds formalin-fixed tissues into paraffin blocks for long-term preservation and sectioning.
    • Microarray Manufacturing:Using a microarrayer, the Histology Specialist manufactures cell line and tissue microarrays.
    • Quality Control: The Histology Specialist performs quality control checks throughout the histology processes to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and reliability of prepared slides, embedded tissues, and microarrays. Document and address any deviations or non-conformances as per standard operating procedures.
    • Equipment Operation and Maintenance: The Histology Specialist operates and maintains histology equipment, including microtomes, cryostats, embedding machines, and microarrayers. Ensure proper functioning, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate equipment maintenance and calibration.
    • Collaboration and Communication:The Histology Specialist collaborates with other team members, such as administrative staff, pathologists, researchers, and laboratory technicians, to ensure a smooth workflow and timely completion of projects. Communicate effectively to understand project requirements, provide updates, and address any technical issues.
    • Record-Keeping and Documentation:The Histology Specialist maintains comprehensive documentation, including slide labeling, staining protocols, and quality control records.
    • Technical Advice and Customer Support:The Histology Specialist provides technical advice and support to customers, answering inquiries and resolving technical concerns related to histology products.
    • Tissue Inventory:The Histology Specialist is responsible for maintaining the inventory of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded and frozen tissues.

    Required Skills/Abilities

    • Proficiency in histology techniques, including microtomy, slide preparation, staining (H&E and IHC), paraffin embedding of formalin-fixed tissues, cryostat microtomy, and use of tissue microarrayer.
    • Strong knowledge of quality control and assurance in histology processes.
    • Experience in tissue inventory management and microarray manufacturing.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills to coordinate workload and meet deadlines.
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with other departments and customers.
    • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high-quality standards.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

    Education and/or Work Experience

    • Associate’s degree plus one year of full-time experience in histopathology within the last three years under the supervision of a pathologist. OR
    • HT (ASCP) certification, or equivalent by training and experience.

    Physical Requirements

    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
    • Must be able to lift to 15 pounds at times.

    Job Type: Full-time

    Pay: $25.00 - $30.50 per hour

    Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
