Histology Technologist performs complex histological procedures used to prepare specimens of tissue for examination and analysis by a Pathologist. Performs grossing, processing, embedding, microtomy, and both routine and multiple staining of samples. Being a Histology Technologist performs quality control on completed slides. Identifies problems that may affect diagnosis and results. Additionally, Histology Technologist records observations from tests. Documents maintenance of instruments and equipment used in the lab. Complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnologist certification (HTL). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Performs various routine functions precisely and accurately to assist the laboratory professional staff and to facilitate testing by building cases in EPIC, assist with clerical tasks, receive and process specimens and perform transcription as needed. Upon completion of training, assist with staining of slides, filing slides, sending out slides for consultation and referred testing studies; answer department phones, assist pathologists with clerical duties as needed and perform other non-complex department functions as assigned.
Qualifications:
Lab Assistant I – HS or GED required, phlebotomy or transcription experience preferred.
Lab Assistant II – HS or GED required and a certified phlebotomist, or AS in health related sciences or Chemistry, Microbiology, Biology or Medical Technology.
Lab Assistant III – BS required in health related sciences or Chemistry, Microbiology, Biology or Medical Technology.
