Histology Technologist performs complex histological procedures used to prepare specimens of tissue for examination and analysis by a Pathologist. Performs grossing, processing, embedding, microtomy, and both routine and multiple staining of samples. Being a Histology Technologist performs quality control on completed slides. Identifies problems that may affect diagnosis and results. Additionally, Histology Technologist records observations from tests. Documents maintenance of instruments and equipment used in the lab. Complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnologist certification (HTL). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Under general supervision, follows established procedures for preparation of surgical and autopsy specimens. Prepares mounts on slides and stains or treats tissue with chemicals so as to reveal specific structural details under microscopic analysis. Perform histology duties to prepare material for pathologic evaluation. Additional characteristics for the Lead Role: Acts as a lead for an assigned area of department, including assisting with the day to day operations of the department, responsible for quality control and regulatory readiness of department.

intra operative consultations when requested by pathologist.
Embeds, cuts, stains and
coverslips slides efficiently.
Performs de-calcifications and
other procedures as appropriate to enhance tissue sectioning.
Prepares laboratory solutions
and reagents according to established procedures and exact formula in
order to maintain adequate quantities for daily work assignments.
Utilizes performance
improvement principles to assess and improve quality. Records and reviews
quality control data.
Catalogs and files reports and
materials as needed.
Distributes processed slides to
Pathologists for review.
Assists lead in supply
inventory for section.
Participates in writing
procedures.
Assist lead with special
projects.
Performs other duties as
assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.
