Histology Technologist performs complex histological procedures used to prepare specimens of tissue for examination and analysis by a Pathologist. Performs grossing, processing, embedding, microtomy, and both routine and multiple staining of samples. Being a Histology Technologist performs quality control on completed slides. Identifies problems that may affect diagnosis and results. Additionally, Histology Technologist records observations from tests. Documents maintenance of instruments and equipment used in the lab. Complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnologist certification (HTL). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. We are seeking a part time histotech to help assist our full time histotech on busy days (about two days per week) at our histology lab near Marshall Hospital in Placerville. The histotech will also help gross GI biopsy specimens at the pathology department located at the hospital.
Expected duties and responsibilities include:
- Preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologists, which includes ensuring proper tissue processing, embedding of tissue in paraffin, microtomy of tissue, staining slides with routine H&E, cover slipping, labeling slides and delivery of slides to Pathologists (when the lab assistant is not present).
- The average block count is ~50-80/per day. Some days are 90-100 blocks. The first batch of slides are expected to be given to the Pathologist by 10 AM.
- Perform all special stain procedures (as needed).
- Immunohistochemistry is not performed in our lab.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment and troubleshoot equipment failures (when main histotech is not present, as needed)
- Be compliant with CAP and local/federal regulations.
