Histology Technologist performs complex histological procedures used to prepare specimens of tissue for examination and analysis by a Pathologist. Performs grossing, processing, embedding, microtomy, and both routine and multiple staining of samples. Being a Histology Technologist performs quality control on completed slides. Identifies problems that may affect diagnosis and results. Additionally, Histology Technologist records observations from tests. Documents maintenance of instruments and equipment used in the lab. Complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnologist certification (HTL). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Position Overview:
In this role, you’ll be responsible for a variety of tasks consisting primarily of gross examination of surgical pathology specimens and preparation of specimens for histological processing, completing work in an efficient manner that optimizes workflow.
Other critical aspects include project management, budget development and maintenance, management of supplies and resources as well as assisting with Quality Assurance processes.
Under the direction and supervision of a pathologist, you can assist in all aspects of anatomic pathology and participate in seminars; and perform all work leading up to but not including diagnosis. You are also qualified to do complex surgical resections (pelvic exenterations, whipple procedures, etc.) and autopsies including gross, PAD/FAD and clinical summary.
Requirements:
* 3 – 5 years of pathology experience that includes gross pathology, frozen section cutting and autopsy
* Bachelor’s degree in a Pathology Assistant program or successful completion of post-bachelor's program from an NACCLS approved school of Pathologist Assistants
* NYS Pathology Assistant license
* Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)
* Post-Baccalaureate training in anatomic and clinical pathology preferred
