Histology Technologist performs complex histological procedures used to prepare specimens of tissue for examination and analysis by a Pathologist. Performs grossing, processing, embedding, microtomy, and both routine and multiple staining of samples. Being a Histology Technologist performs quality control on completed slides. Identifies problems that may affect diagnosis and results. Additionally, Histology Technologist records observations from tests. Documents maintenance of instruments and equipment used in the lab. Complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnologist certification (HTL). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Position Summary:
The histology trainer is responsible for creating and maintaining training regimens for the following:
New histology technicians that were internal promotions
New histology technicians that were hired outside of the company, regardless of level of experience
Traveler histology technicians
Employees from other departments that are eligible to cross train in embedding
Any histology technicians that are below productivity expectations
It is crucial that the histology trainer is knowledgeable in histology Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), embedding and cutting troubleshooting, embedding and cutting efficiency, and embedding and cutting quality. The histology trainer will need to alter their start time if they need to overlap with trainees on other shifts. The histology trainer will collaborate with the trainees and the supervisors/manager to ensure the trainees become successful histology technicians. The primary focus will be to train employees in embedding and microtomy, training in benches may be required if necessary.
Position Schedule:
Essential Duties:
Create and maintain training documents and training plans
Teach both basic and advanced skills in embedding and microtomy with high quality
Identify potential areas of improvement for underperforming histology technicians
Coach histology technicians to increase their productivity metrics
Slide QA as necessary
Update the supervisors/manager in trainee statuses
Works on special projects as assigned by supervisor
Other duties as assigned
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Must be efficient at embedding and cutting
>30 blocks/hour embedding (400 ETM average)
>20 blocks/hour cutting (400 ETM average)
Must have strong communication and comprehension abilities
Abe to translate their histology knowledge and skills without impacting quality
Must be detail oriented
Must have organizational skills
Must always behave as a professional role model
Qualifications/Experience:
HT/HTL (ASCP) certified preferred
3 years of Histology laboratory technician experience
Leadership experience preferred
Knowledge of histology aspects such as IHC, special stains, etc.
Physical Requirements:

Walking
Sitting
Computer use
Occasional travel to other company sites
Adjust start time as needed
