Histology Technologist performs complex histological procedures used to prepare specimens of tissue for examination and analysis by a Pathologist. Performs grossing, processing, embedding, microtomy, and both routine and multiple staining of samples. Being a Histology Technologist performs quality control on completed slides. Identifies problems that may affect diagnosis and results. Additionally, Histology Technologist records observations from tests. Documents maintenance of instruments and equipment used in the lab. Complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnologist certification (HTL). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Responsible to the Histology Team Leader/and Anatomic Pathology Supervisor and works in a self-directed work team performing various procedures on tissue samples. Works closely with the Pathologists and is responsible to practice within the scope of their duties and licensure in accordance with approved policies, procedures and protocols. Follows all safety practices and maintains competency with skills to ensure high quality testing services. Must identify opportunities for and contribute to the improvement of quality, safety and cost, as well as patient, customer, and employee satisfaction. Contributes to positive outcomes and meets the vision and cultural expectations of the organization by exhibiting professional behavior and laboratory expertise.
