Histology Technologist performs complex histological procedures used to prepare specimens of tissue for examination and analysis by a Pathologist. Performs grossing, processing, embedding, microtomy, and both routine and multiple staining of samples. Being a Histology Technologist performs quality control on completed slides. Identifies problems that may affect diagnosis and results. Additionally, Histology Technologist records observations from tests. Documents maintenance of instruments and equipment used in the lab. Complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnologist certification (HTL). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. General Summary: Work involves responsibility for accuracy in preparing, staining and completing special testing as required to assist pathologists in making correct diagnoses. Employees of this class may assist in training lower level technicians and may ensure that work progresses in the absence of a supervisor. Work is performed in accordance with standard laboratory practices. Procedures and technical guidance is made available. Work is performed under the supervision of a pathologist or other qualified medical director.

Essential Job Responsibilities:
Required Minimum Education: Associate Arts degree in laboratory science or related area of study, obtained from a regionally accredited institution, may be substituted with years of experience. Must include at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
Experience: Laboratory experience preferred but not required.
PRN employees are expected to work a minimum of one (1) day per month.

1. Requires the ability to sit for long periods of time analyzing and interpreting data, calibrating precise instruments, completing written work orders, problem solving, communicating with providers, co-workers and vendors both verbally and in writing.
2. May occasionally be exposed to hazardous working environment with hazardous chemicals and infectious disease.
3. May occasionally lift up to 40 lbs.
