Histology Technologist performs complex histological procedures used to prepare specimens of tissue for examination and analysis by a Pathologist. Performs grossing, processing, embedding, microtomy, and both routine and multiple staining of samples. Being a Histology Technologist performs quality control on completed slides. Identifies problems that may affect diagnosis and results. Additionally, Histology Technologist records observations from tests. Documents maintenance of instruments and equipment used in the lab. Complies with established laboratory policies for universal precautions and safety. Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically requires completion of an accredited histotechnology program. Requires ASCP Histotechnologist certification (HTL). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Histology Technologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Job Overview: Primary Function: Processes, embeds, sections and stains surgical pathology materials to assist the pathologist in making diagnostic recommendations. Processes routine surgical pathology specimens from login thru slide filing and charge issuance. Assists in the preparation of stat frozen sections. Prepares and verifies special stains. Prepares reagents and maintains equipment in good operating condition. Performs all QC & QA as dictated by accreditation agencies. Maintains an adequate supplies inventory. Reviews and updates policies and procedures biennially. Applies the knowledge and skills necessary to assess data reflective of each patient's status and provide the care appropriate to the age of the patients served, ie., infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.
