Hospice Director directs, supervises, and governs the hospice program including inpatient care, home care and bereavement follow-up. Administers and maintains quality assurance, environmental, and infection control policies in accordance with facility objectives. Being a Hospice Director prepares reports for hospital administration on activities of the facility operation. Develops hospice related educational and informational programs. Additionally, Hospice Director requires a bachelor's degree of nursing. Typically reports to top management. The Hospice Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. To be a Hospice Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience.     Responsibilities

    The Director of Patient Care Services is responsible for the overall direction of home healthclinical services. The Director of Patient Care Services establishes, implements and evaluatesgoals and objectives for home health services that meet and promote the standards of qualityand contribute to the total organization and philosophy.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Coordinates and oversees all direct and indirect patient services provided by clinicalorganization personnel.2. Provides guidance and counseling to coordinators and Clinical Managers to assist them incontinually improving all aspects of home health care services, provided throughorganization personnel.3. Assists Clinical Managers in managing clinical teams and planning.4. Provides help in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient andfamily/caregiver care to all clinical personnel as indicated.5. Assists the Executive Director/Administrator in the preparation and administration of theorganization's budget.6. Interprets operational indicators to detect census changes and increases or decreases involume, which could impact staffing levels, revenues or expenses.7. Evaluates performance of Clinical Managers.8. Assists Clinical Managers to develop skills and techniques in evaluating the performance ofclinicians.9. Hires, evaluates, and terminates organization personnel.10. Conducts clinician performance evaluations annually, or more frequently if indicated.11. Oversees the maintenance of patient clinical records, statistics, reports and records forpurposes of evaluation and reporting of organization activities.12. Assures proper maintenance of clinical records in compliance with local, state and federallaws.13. Responsible for the maintenance of adequate and appropriate inventory supplies andequipment for the provision of patient services.14. Develops, implements and evaluates the orientation program for new organizationpersonnel. Responsible for orientation of new organization personnel, either directly or bydelegating to another staff member.15. Plans and implements in-service and continuing education programs to meet education andtraining needs of organization personnel.16. Assists with the evaluation of organization performance via performance improvementprogram, productivity, quarterly and annual reviews. Assures for the quality and safedelivery of hospice services provided through the Organization.17. Assists in the development of organization goals. Develops, recommends, and administersOrganization policies and procedures.18. Assures compliance with all local, state and federal laws regarding licensure andcertification of organization personnel and, maintains compliance to the Joint CommissionHospice standards.19. Stays informed about changes in the field of nursing and hospice care; shares informationwith appropriate organization personnel.20. Promotes hospice referrals in the health care community.21. In the absence of the Executive Director/Administrator, the Director of Patient CareServices will become the acting Executive Director/Administrator and will be vested withauthority to act in behalf of the Executive Director/Administrator.22. Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director/Administrator.

    Qualifications

    1. Registered nurse with current licensure to practice professional nursing in the State.2. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited program by the National League forNursing. Master’s degree in health care preferred.3. The Director of Patient Care Services shall qualify for the position by fulfilling therequirements under one of the following categories, unless the individual has beenpreviously approved for such employment by a program flexibility issued for the individual’scurrent position at the hospice agency prior to April 1, 1995 or:A. Three years of management experience within the last five years in a home health orrelated health care organization, at least one year of which was a supervisory oradministrative capacity.B. A registered nurse with four years of experience within the last five years in a hospiceagency, primary care clinic or health facility, at least one year of which was in asupervisory or administrative capacity.4. Demonstrated ability to supervise and direct professional administrative personnel.5. Knowledge and expertise in clinical decision-making and Quality Management review andevaluation.6. Ability to market and deal tactfully with customers and the community.7. Must be a licensed driver with an automobile that is insured in accordance with state and/orOrganization requirements and is in good working order.8. Has excellent observation, verbal and written communication skills.9. Knowledge of business management, governmental regulations and Joint Commissionstandards.10. Participation in Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement Program and Bridge Hospicesponsored training.
