Hospice Director directs, supervises, and governs the hospice program including inpatient care, home care and bereavement follow-up. Administers and maintains quality assurance, environmental, and infection control policies in accordance with facility objectives. Being a Hospice Director prepares reports for hospital administration on activities of the facility operation. Develops hospice related educational and informational programs. Additionally, Hospice Director requires a bachelor's degree of nursing. Typically reports to top management. The Hospice Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. To be a Hospice Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience.   • JOB SUMMARY: In accordance with 42 CFR 418l100A governing body designates the Executive Director to assume full legal authority and responsibility for the management of the hospice, the provision of all hospice services, its fiscal operations, and continuous quality assessment and performance improvement. A qualified administrator appointed by and reporting to the governing body is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the hospice. The administrator must be a hospice employee and possess education and experience required by the hospices governing body.

    REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
    Bachelors degree in Business Administration or Health Care preferred, or equivalent direct work experience
    Must have three (3) years of experience in health care management, five (5) years preferred

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
    Must demonstrate an ability to supervise and direct professional and administrative personnel
    Must possess an ability to deal tactfully with the community
    Must possess a knowledge of corporate business management
    Must understand hospice care and the services provided to patient and family/caregiver through an interdisciplinary group
    Must possess an intimate knowledge of Medicare Hospice Certification

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
    Must be able to travel
    Must be flexible in work hours

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
    Perform tasks associated with operational planning and budgeting
    Ensure organizational compliance with legal, regulatory and accreditation requirements
    Monitor business operations to insure financial stability
    Evaluate hospice services and personnel using measurable outcomes and objectives
    Provide conflict and complaint management and resolution
    Establish and maintain effective channels of communication including integration or technology, as applicable
    Ensure hospice personnel stay current with clinical information and practices
    Ensure adequate and appropriate staffing
    Provide staff development including orientation, in-service, continuing education, competency testing and quality assessment performance improvement
    Ensure that interdisciplinary care is provided
    Ensure supportive services are available to personnel
    Ensure coordination with other departments, services and senior management, as appropriate
    Ensure staff and organization stay current on local/national hospice issues and trends
    Ensure that appropriate service policies and procedures are developed and implemented to accomplish identified outcomes
    Direct staff in performance of their duties including admission, discharge, transfer, revocation and provision of service to patients
    Ensure appropriate staff supervision during all service hours
    Monitor service utilization to ensure delivery of comprehensive care
    Ensure services provided by other agencies are authorized by hospice
    Monitor operational progress toward accomplishing operational and strategic goals
    Ensure appropriate data collection and completed reports are received by the Governing Body
    Ensure adequate space, equipment and supplies are available
    Ensure actionable objectives are derived from evaluation of hospice services and personnel
    Ensure that structure and systems promote interdisciplinary care
    Ensure collaboration with agencies and vendors for effective management of services
    Ensure standards of ethical business and clinical practice are maintained

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    Must comply with company policies, procedures and processes in addition to Hospice and Homecare rules and regulations
    Must be dependable and flexible in work schedule
    Must comply with harassment and discrimination policies
    Must foster good working relationships
    Must be a licensed driver with licensed automobile that is insured in accordance with organization/state requirements and is in good working order
    Must be willing to submit to a criminal background check prior to hire and annually thereafter

    PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
    May have to travel in inclement weather
    May be required to stand and sit for long periods
    Must be able to hear and see with or without aid
    Must be able to read and follow instructions as required
    Must be willing to participate in a drug/alcohol screen prior to hire, if involved in a work-related automobile accident or if reasonable suspicion is reported
