House Supervisor provides oversight for multiple hospital departments in the absence of unit management. Addresses patient care, staffing, and any other issues that may arise. Being a House Supervisor supervises nurses and staff and takes administrative responsibilities and ensures adequate staffing for the oncoming shift. Handles occurrences during the shift, ensuring appropriate documentation and communication. Additionally, House Supervisor determines the issues to be referred to the Administrator on call. Collaborates with patients, family members and physicians to ensure needs are met and problems are resolved. Typically requires a bachelor's degree of nursing. Typically reports to manager or head of a unit/department. Requires certification as a registered nurse (RN). The House Supervisor manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions.     JOB SUMMARY

    Assess patients and plan care for shift needs in all departments with assistance from nursing staff and department managers. Supervision of all nursing personnel in the performance of consistently high-quality patient care. The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status. They must be able to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's/area's/department's policies and procedures.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS

    Current Wyoming licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse. Prefer Bachelor of Science in nursing.

    EXPERIENCE

    Minimum of two years’ experience in the acute care of medical and surgical patients, with additional experience in ER, OB, ICU and pediatric nursing. Experience in managing personnel desired.

    SKILLS

    Knowledge of medical/surgical nursing principles. Able to perform effectively in highly stressful situations. Must be able to assist writing policies and procedures. Must interact effectively with a wide variety of people. Excellent communication skills. Able to assume a leadership role and serve as an example to other employees. Ability to function independently and prioritize. Must be well motivated and organized.

    REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

    Maintain and keep current BLS, ACLS, PALS and NRP certifications. TNCC and STABLE are desired.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Staff shift and plan staffing for next shift according to nursing care and standards, justify in writing to the Chief Clinical Officer deviation from these calculations.
    • Assist with patient care in all areas, as required. Assume responsibility for ER when ER personnel are absent.
    • Serve as administrative resource person to staff.
    • Communicate pertinent information to on-coming House Supervisor/Nurse Manager and Chief Clinical Officer. Document details of potential disciplinary/behavior problems and send information to appropriate clinical nursing manager and Chief Clinical Officer.
    • Assist nurse managers and Chief Clinical Officer with employee evaluations through input and anecdotal note documentation of both positive and negative observations.
    • Act as nursing staff representative to physicians.
    • Respond to all emergencies and resuscitation. Assume team leader responsibility during resuscitation unless ER, ICU, or OB charge nurse is already performing in that role.
    • Evaluate quality of nursing care in all areas, making patient rounds as able.
    • Oversee admissions, transfers and discharges during shift.
    • Supervise staff in maintaining adequate drug records; initiate action to correct errors in the narcotic count.
    • Assume responsibility for staff performance during the shift; participate in in-service planning and presentation during the shift. Initiate incident reports when indicated with follow-up with the Chief Clinical Officer
    • Serve as nursing resource person to staff. Be available and willing to teach as need arises. Maintain current knowledge of CRH Policies and Procedures.
    • Support administrative and nurse manager's decisions and policies. Adhere to CRH Policies and Procedures. Follow proper chain of command.

    SECONDARY FUNCTIONS

    • Adjust daily schedule for illness, emergency or census influx. May participate in staff coverage if competent and off duty and all other options for coverage have failed.
    • Document all sick calls, tardiness, absenteeism, and problems with dress code. Keep "on call" list and "call in extra" list accurate and up to date.
    • Administer safety policies and procedures as necessary.
    • Assure quality of patient care through rounds.
    • Call in ancillary personnel and departments as necessary.
    • Assure infection control policies are observed.
    • Oversee crash cart checks and documentation.
    • Assist staff with written care plans and medical record documentation.
    • Assume responsibility for supply management; carry pharmacy and stock room keys.
    • Participate in nurse management activities and in-services as required by nursing and hospital administration.
    • Incident command leader until appropriate Senior Leader is available to take over command.
    • Adhere to legal guidelines and hospital policy regarding release of information and evidence to law enforcement, media or the public.
    • Participate in activities to promote CRH in community health and education.
    • Be willing and have the ability to support staff in all areas as need arises.
    • Participate in in-service programs as both student and teacher. Attend workshops, as possible, and take responsibility for keeping own knowledge and skills up to date. Attend mandatory in-services.
