POSITION SUMMARY
Supervises nursing staff in providing skilled nursing care to assure high quality of care and quality of life for residents on all nursing units.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
-
Ensures that the quality of nursing care meets the ANA Standards of Gerontological Nursing Practice and is consistent with the policies and procedures of the Sherrill House Nursing Services department.

Assures that nursing care is delivered in accordance with physician instructions, the Multidisciplinary Team Plan, and policies and procedures of Nursing Services.

Assists nursing staff with resident assessments, setting priorities for resident care, and. appropriate documentation.

Consults with staff when residents experience a change in status and facilitates follow-up with physicians and nurse practitioner.

Collaborates with nurse managers in assuring continuity of resident care and in promoting cooperation among staff from each shift.

Promotes positive communication with families and visitors.

Collaborates with Staff Development in coordinating orientation for new staff.

Participates in interviewing and hiring of new staff.
-
Assists the Director of Nursing Services in developing a staffing plan that ensures safe and comprehensive resident care.

Collaborates with Associate Director of Nursing and/or Nurse Managers in developing staff time schedules and scheduling staff when unexpected vacancies occur.

Evaluates staff performance, discusses, and prepares Performance Reviews. Supports and utilizes a participatory style of leadership.

Encourages staff problem-solving and supports staff morale by arranging individual and group conferences.

Counsels staff concerning their performances and adherence to Personnel Policies and Procedures.
-
Ensures that resident status information and personnel information are communicated according to established channels.

Consults with Associate Director of Nursing Services and Director of Clinical services on a regular basis.
-
Participates in nursing committees and task forces.
-
Promotes cooperation among all disciplines at Sherrill House.
-
Responds to changing needs of Nursing Services and may assume other responsibilities.
-
Supports the philosophy and goals of Sherrill House and Nursing Services.
-
Communicates with families regarding the health status of residents and assures their participation in team conferences.
-
Ensures that adequate supplies and equipment are available.
-
Participates in continuing educational programs that contribute to professional development.
-
Develops, implements, and supports Quality Improvement programs.
-
Ensure that all nursing service personnel comply with the procedures set forth in the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
-
Ensure that all nursing service personnel follow their respective job descriptions.
-
Participate in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies as requested by the Administrator or Director of Nursing Services.
-
Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
-
Complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
-
Interpret the department's policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies as required.
-
Ensure that a sufficient number of licensed practical and/or registered nurses, an certified nursing assistants are available at all times.

Develop work assignments.
-
Make daily rounds to ensure that all nursing service personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards.
- Monitor absenteeism to ensure that an adequate number of nursing care personnel are always on duty
-
Ensure that established policies and procedures, including dress codes, are followed by all departmental personnel.

Review complaints and grievances made or filed by department personnel. Make appropriate reports as may be necessary.

Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the unit.
-
Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions, their expected time of arrival, room assignment, etc. and ensure that rooms are ready for new admissions.
-
Greet newly admitted residents upon admission. Escort them to their rooms as necessary.
-
Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
-
Review nurses' notes to ensure that they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care being provided, that they reflect the resident's response to the care, and that such care is provided in accordance with the resident's wishes.

Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
-
Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules to ensure that medications are being administered as ordered and that treatments are provided as scheduled.

Monitor nursing care to ensure that all residents are treated fairly, and with kindness, dignity, and respect.
-
Ensure that all nursing service personnel are knowledgeable of the residents' responsibilities and rights including the right to refuse treatment.
-
Review complaints and grievances made by residents and make a written/oral report to the Director indicating what action(s) were taken to resolve the complaint or grievance. Follow facility's established procedures.

Maintain a written record of resident's complaints and/or grievances that indicates the action taken to resolve the complaint and the status of the complaint.

Report and investigate all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property

Specific Requirements/Competencies
-
Must possess a current, unencumbered, active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in this state.
-
Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
-
Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
-
Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the public.
-
Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.

Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.

Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing quality care.

Educational Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in nursing
Experience: Three years of clinical experience in gerontological nursing and one year of management experience.
Computer Skills: Ability to utilize a management information system for the purposes of collecting and analyzing data, maintaining files, providing summary reports, and communicating relevant information to department managers, administrative staff and the governing board.
