Infection Control Manager develops and implements infection control policies designed to reduce or eliminate outbreaks in the facility. Develops and implements facility-wide infection prevention and control measures to protect patients, staff and visitors. Being an Infection Control Manager monitors patient care for compliance with established standards and investigates known or suspected sources of infections in order to determine the source and ensure control. Develops and provides related education to staff. Additionally, Infection Control Manager complies with state, federal and Joint Commission standards relating to infection control. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Infection Control Manager typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Responsibilities:
    Develops strategic infection prevention and control plans and the policies and procedures to support the plan with minimal supervision; implements evidence-based practices and evaluates practices to foster ongoing improvement in hospital-wide Infection Control Program; serves as a communicating link and resource between hospital committees, all hospital departments, and the community as needed; abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization’s values; adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality; enhances growth and development through educational programs; participates in Association for Professional in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC); participates on Infection Control related committees and other committees as assigned; requires minimal supervision to safely perform essential functions; utilizes proper body mechanics when moving equipment that is necessary to perform essential functions; oversees and facilitates provision of Infection Prevention and Control education to personnel, visitors, patients and community as required via standards and as needed for an individualized situation; collects, reviews and analyzes Infection Prevention and Control data for patterns and trends; utilizes Infection Prevention and Control findings for outcome management and provides feedback; utilizes MedMined and NHSN software to accurately compile and analyze data related to Infection Prevention and Control; collaborates and assists with coverage and the activities of the Employee/Occupational Health Department to include performing health and drug screening on new and current employees and administering medications, including controlled substances and immunizations by all routes; identifies and takes appropriate action concerning workplace infection and safety issues; participates in Hazard-Survey-Infection Prevention Rounds; observes and evaluates the employee/patient care environment for adherence to Infection Prevention and control standards; performs surveillance cultures; evaluates products and procedures to improve outcomes or processes incorporating evidence-based practices; performs surveillance, house-wide and targeted, in accordance with the Infection Prevention and Control plan; applies epidemiological principles directed at improving patient outcomes; reports mandatory requirements for the state of Alabama Mike Denton Act through CDC’s NHSN; develops, updates, and reinforces Infection Control policies and procedures according to legal and regulatory standards and recommended hospital standards; participates and assists in research studies and projects; participates in Performance Improvement activities; provides input for budget and program development; utilizes cost effective practices in performing all aspects of the job; participates in Disaster Preparedness activities, Healthcare Coalition, Serious Infectious Disease (SID) Team/Unit, and Disaster Subcommittee; maintains accurate and complete documentation of nosocomial infections, reportable diseases, and surveillance records by: utilizing NHSN tools and procedures, utilizing Medmined data, completing Board of Health log and facilitating and approving Infection Control Committee Minutes; maintains accurate and complete educational records; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required; related duties as required.

    Qualifications:
    Bachelor’s degree in nursing, allied health, a physical or natural science, or a related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama, four years of related experience in an acute care setting, current licensure in clinical field, if clinical degree, and Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIPC) within three years of employment.

    Master’s degree is preferred and may substitute for up to one year of the required experience. Infection Prevention and Control experience is preferred.
