Job Description:
As a Senior Director of Applied Research, you will lead teams in driving strategic innovation and collaboration with interdisciplinary leaders in Applied Science, Engineering, and Product across Capital One. This role involves managing a team of applied scientists while representing Capital One in the external research community. You will have the opportunity to partner with cross-functional teams to deliver AI-powered products that transform how customers interact with their finances. Additionally, you will utilize state-of-the-art AI technologies and platforms to uncover insights hidden within large volumes of data. Your responsibilities will include building AI foundation models, engaging in high-impact applied research, and translating complex work into tangible business goals.
Responsibilities:
- Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver AI-powered products that revolutionize customer interactions with their finances.
- Utilize a wide range of technologies, such as Pytorch, AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, Lightning, VectorDBs, and more, to extract insights from large volumes of data.
- Develop AI foundation models through all stages of development, from design to implementation.
- Conduct high-impact applied research to drive the next generation of customer experiences.
- Effectively communicate the complexity of your work to stakeholders, translating it into tangible business goals.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Applied Research with at least 6 years of experience, or M.S. with at least 8 years of experience in Applied Research.
- At least 5 years of experience in people leadership.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of AI methodologies.
- Proficiency in developing large deep learning models, with expertise in areas such as training optimization, self-supervised learning, robustness, explainability, or reinforcement learning.
- Experience in delivering libraries, platform-level code, or solution-level code.
- Ability to drive research agenda, select impactful problems, and independently execute long-running projects.
- Technical proficiency in open-source languages and cloud computing platforms.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
- Specific experience and accomplishments in natural language processing (NLP) or behavioral models.
- Strong background in optimization, fine-tuning of large language models, or data preparation.
- Demonstrated ability to guide large-scale model training teams.
- Experience with large-scale deployment of models in real-time and streaming environments.
