Job Title: Instructional Technology Specialist
Reports To: Director of Digital Learning and Instructional Design Services
Status: Full Time, Exempt
General Description: The Instructional Technology Specialist serves as a primary administrator of the learning management system (LMS), Moodle. This position is responsible for overseeing the system, facilitating upgrades, and managing the integrations of other tools within the LMS. This position also provides specialized training, support, and consultative services to users of the LMS, while continuously promoting best practices in technology-enhanced instruction.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Under the supervision of the Director, oversee the day-to-day operation of the LMS.
- Manage system upgrades, systems support, and integrations, LTIs and plug-ins within the LMS.
- Ensure the functionality, navigability, usability, and accessibility of the LMS, including but not limited to the creation of user tours, front-facing web links, images and text.
- Ensure proper user permissions in the LMS.
- Test, monitor, and troubleshoot software application issues within the LMS.
- Act as primary contact with our external hosting provider to facilitate system upgrades, troubleshoot deeper system-wide issues, and identify solutions.
- Liaison with other campus departments (e.g., Office of Information Technology, Office of the Registrar) to ensure connections between the LMS and campus databases, from which it receives the most recent enrollment data and user information, are maintained.
- By request, generate Moodle reports including but not limited to user access and participation logs, user reports and statistics, etc. for general data analysis and usage.
- Utilize data insights to identify trends, opportunities for training/improvement, and areas of success.
- During upgrade periods, customize the LMS to align with the College’s branding and visual identity.
- Conduct research of new features and plugins that are available in future LMS versions that improve functionality and user engagement, providing insights to supervisor and dept. colleagues.
- As part of a team, provide training, consultation and support services to users of the LMS, while continuously promoting the best practices in technology-enhanced instruction (virtually and in person).
- Assist with the development of training and support materials (e.g., online tutorials, videos, demos, etc.) for users of the LMS.
- Other relevant duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years relevant work experience, or a Master’s degree in a relevant field.
- Experience with learning management systems, such as Moodle, Canvas, Brightspace, etc.
- Experience providing training and customer service.
- Strong technical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with a variety of instructional technologies and multimedia applications.
- Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative environment.
- Ability to organize complex materials, manage more than one project at a time, adapt to changing priorities, maintain sensitive and confidential information, and communicate effectively in an academic setting.
- Willingness to support unlikely LMS emergencies after hours (e.g., system outage).
- Familiarity with instructional design principles and online/digital learning best practices a plus.
- Web development skills in CSS, HTML, etc. a plus.
