    40 hours per week

    Summary/Objective of Position:

    The position will be expected to provide undergraduate/graduate instruction across the breadth of cell and molecular biology. The successful candidate will help provide student research opportunities on the Navajo Nation and surrounding lands. Dine College faculty have access to diverse, ecologically rich tribally controlled lands in northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico and southeastern Utah, including desert riparian and aquatic zones. As such, the successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain strong positive relationships with the Dine in and beyond the college.
    Basic and applied research can be conducted at Dine College research facilities which include molecular and chemical analysis facilities, agricultural facilities, and a new research building scheduled for completion 2025. In addition, Tsaile Lake is adjacent to the campus. Grant projects tend to be collaborative among Dine College faculty and so, collegiality is highly valued.


    Description of Essential Functions of the Position

    (90%) Instruction, Research, and Scholarship: Provide undergraduate and graduate students instruction in, but not limited to, molecular and cell biology, genetics, microbiology, developmental biology, and special topics such as senior capstone courses. Courses such as biochemistry, bioinformatics, and other courses in the candidates specialty may also available.
    (5%) Mentoring, Advising, and Supervision: Mentor and serve as an advisor to students, train and supervise personnel in conducting research at the undergraduate, and graduate and serve on the graduate committees of other graduate students. Supervision of technical staff if grants are developed.
    (5%) Service: Faculty are expected to be collegial members of their units, and to perform appropriate service that contributes to the effectiveness of their units, departments, the College and their professions. Service includes outreach to the greater Dine community to better position the college within the community.


    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education & Experience


    Minimum:

    Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology, developmental biology, genetics, bioinformatics, cytogenetics or related discipline.

    Preferred:

    (Special Qualifications): Postdoctoral experience. ASCP Specialist certificate in Molecular Biology/Cytology/Cytometry. Record of publication in, or relevant to, the biological sciences. Experience with, or interest in, working collaboratively across departments, as well as working with tribal peoples. Record of, or potential for, collaborative, multidisciplinary research, especially in research contributing to the Dine people. Record of successful outreach with stakeholders, and extramural funding.


    Knowledge:

    Cell and molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics, cytogenetics or related discipline.

    Skills:

    Effective communication - effective written, spoken, and non-verbal communication skills. Problem-solving and decision-making skills. Oral fluency in Navajo is highly desirable, but not mandatory. Navajo/American Indian preference is exercised but not mandatory. Bilingual and bi-literate Navajo preferred but not mandatory. A faculty is expected to have a high degree of proficiency in computer software used to support the administration of higher education. Software use include but is not limited to, general office functions such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet services. In addition, a faculty is expected to utilize academic-specific programs for course delivery (Face-to-face, synchronous, and asynchronous), and course maintenance (such as grade submissions, posting of syllabus, etc.).

    Abilities:

    A faculty expected to have a high degree of proficiency in computer software used to support the administration of higher education. Software use include, but is not limited to, general office functions, such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Blackboard LMS, and Internet services. In addition, a faculty is expected to utilize academic-specific programs for course delivery (face-to-face, synchronous, and asynchronous), and course maintenance (such as grade submissions, posting of syllabus, modules, course itinerary, etc.).

    Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel:

    8-5 pm, M-F, Weekends, Remote potential. Instruction and research is generally indoors but can include outdoor work in adverse weather conditions. Weekend and/or evening work may be necessary. Travel to other campuses, research sites, or other locations for outreach events is expected.

    Other Requirement(s):

    This position requires driving a college GSA vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the college; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle training and history check, posses and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per College Policy.
