    2024 Summer Intern Opportunities – Chemical Engineering (SH&E)

    This opportunity is being offered by National Aerospace Solutions, the team selected by the U.S. Air Force to conduct Test and Operations Sustainment at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC), Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee.  National Aerospace Solutions is a limited liability company comprised of Bechtel National Inc. (as lead company) and Sierra Lobo Inc. with teaming Subcontractors nLogic Inc. and Chugach Federal Solutions Inc. AEDC operates more than 55 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells, space environmental chambers, arc heaters, ballistic ranges and other specialized units located in six states. Many of the complex's test units have capabilities unmatched elsewhere in the United States; some are unique in the world. AEDC is one of three installations which are part of the Air Force Test Center (AFTC), one of six subordinate commands of the Air Force Materiel Command organization and an important national resource.


    AEDC’s mission is to conduct developmental test and evaluation for the Nation through modeling, simulation, ground, and flight test.  Execution of the mission requires a large team of highly qualified and dedicated professionals from multiple technical disciplines to effectively accomplish the objectives of our test customers.


    The NAS Internship Program offers 10-12 week full time summer internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in chemical engineering. Interns selected must commit to working 40 hours per week from May through August. As part of the internship, students are paired with SH&E professionals who serve as the students’ mentors. Students complete assigned projects gaining valuable experience in their fields of study while contributing to Air Force and NAS missions. Interns will be required to present a briefing to senior management on work accomplished, lessons learned, and further recommended actions.
             
    Examples of types of tasks interns have worked include: (these are examples, not an exhaustive list):

     
    • Conduct ambient dispersion modeling
    • Evaluate NO/NO2/NOx emissions
    • Complete tank inspections and tracking
    • Evaluate effectiveness of water treatment operations
    • Complete emission inventory
    • Ensure equipment to be excessed has passed environmental requirements
    • Evaluate system safety aspects for test operations
    • Evaluate current hazardous chemical use and investigate less hazardous substitutions
    • Produce thorough and effective work instructions per company policy
    • Assist in environmental spill response
    • Evaluate current chemical inventory storage and in use container integrity
    • Evaluate acceptability of new products
    • Perform environmental inspections of facilities

    Basic Qualifications:
    • Resumes must include degree program, projected graduation date, and GPA in order to be considered.
    • Must be currently enrolled in university and pursuing a chemical engineering degree from an accredited engineering college or university.
    • Satisfactory completion of at least one year of study as a full-time student in one of the above listed disciplines at the time the internship begins. Graduate students are also welcome to apply.
    • Minimum GPA of 2.75
    • Ability to work 40 hours each week for 10 to 12 weeks from May to August. This is a full time job
    • Must have reliable transportation to transport oneself from building to building within the industrial complex
    • Must be a U.S. citizen
