    The Economics Department at the University at Albany is seeking an Academic Advisor to oversee advisement services for its undergraduate program. The Academic Advisor provides support to Economics students with respect to academic planning, programming, and course selection. The successful candidate will aid students in planning their academic careers, interpreting academic rules and regulations, and ensuring prerequisites or other course requirements are met. The successful candidate must have a commitment to student-centered advisement, and be comfortable using information technology to assist in advisement.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Oversee advisement for all undergraduate Economics majors.
    • Review degree audits, recommend courses, and help to keep students on track for timely degree completion.
    • Assist in academic planning to fit the needs of students' academic abilities and interests.
    • Advise Economics second majors, minors, and intended majors as needed.
    • Convey and interpret the University's academic rules and regulations, academic prerequisites, programs, majors, and courses of study.
    • May refer students to related support offices within the University (counseling and psychological services, career and professional development, etc.) as appropriate.
    • May work directly with faculty in various schools or departments within the University to enhance the advisement process. As such, the successful candidate must have a thorough knowledge of all current major programs and degree requirements, especially general education requirements, residency requirements, and transfer equivalencies.
    • The advisor facilitates the smooth transfer of students to UAlbany by coordinating transfer advisement to facilitate the smooth transfer of students to the University.

    Additional Responsibilities:

    • Act as liaison to the Registrar in reviewing the audits of graduating seniors and offering advisement to solve degree clearance issues.
    • Relay the need for programmatic adjustments to the Economics curriculum to the appropriate area director or Chair, as necessary.
    • Work in close consultation with the Undergraduate Director, Administrative Manager, and Department Chair, providing feedback on student enrollment needs, and working to ensure procedures for student registration in controlled sections are coordinated and understood.
    • Assist the Undergraduate Director by tracking Undergraduate Bulletin changes throughout the year for inclusion in the yearly update.
    • Serve as an ex-officio member of the Undergraduate Admissions Committee to offer perspective when reviewing and setting policy, deliberating issues relating to the quality of instruction, vetting proposals for topics courses, and generally advise on issues relating to the undergraduate program.
    • Help to organize events relevant to the undergraduate program, such as commencement, student recruitment events, and open houses.
    • Attend meetings and events pertinent to the undergraduate program such as Open Houses, summer transfer planning conferences, and honors program events.
    • Occasional weekends and evenings are required.
    • Update MAPS as necessary, in consultation with ASC/US.
    • Utilize appropriate advising technology (PeopleSoft, EAB, DARS).
    • Maintain email contact information for Economics majors to be used exclusively for information directly related to academic advisement.

    Job Requirements:


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
    • One year of professional experience or relevant graduate-level employment with a college student population.
    • Demonstrated superior interpersonal, written (as assessed by the application materials submitted), and oral communication skills.
    • Strong computer skills.
    • Applicants must address in their cover letter their ability to work with a culturally diverse population.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Master's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
    • Academic advising experience
    • Experience working with DARS and UAlbany advisement technology (EAB Navigate)
