    Overview:

    The Education Department at Grand View University in Des Moines, IA invites applicants to join an innovative department in a liberal arts setting offering undergraduate and Master’s degree programs. We seek applicants who are committed to diversifying the teaching force through intentional recruitment and retention efforts. Our department strives to break barriers to educational access, teach openly about the role of the individual in social change, and work towards cultivating more open approaches to non-dominant cultures/races/orientations; we encourage candidates to apply who have a similar social justice orientation. Our university serves a high population of first-generation college students and transfer students.

    The successful candidate will join a department positioned as a leader in the state related to literacy and dyslexia specialist education. Successful candidates should be committed to excellence and innovation in undergraduate/graduate teaching, working closely with traditional and non-traditional students in a small college environment with a commitment to student success, and active engagement in scholarly activities.     Grand View’s Commitment to you: Grand View provides an intentional mentoring and support program through our Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). New faculty are paired with experienced faculty as a component of an intentional induction program. Faculty in the Education Department collaborate on a regular basis to ensure that the program is preparing teacher candidates to engage in the K-12 schools of the 21st century as innovative, culturally responsive advocates for their students and colleagues.

    This position will serve in a full-time instructor role in academic year 2024-2025, with the possibility to transition to a tenure track position in 2025-2026 and beyond.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Masters of Education required with elementary literacy / reading expertise; Ph.D. or Ed.D. preferred or willingness to pursue terminal degree

    • Preferred specialty in dyslexia or willingness to pursue dyslexia endorsement.

    • Candidates must have previous teaching experience in elementary classrooms

    • Commitment to culturally competent preparation of teacher candidates to work successfully with culturally and linguistically diverse student populations.

    • Experience and passion for mentoring, recruitment and retention, and collaboration with local schools and education stakeholders.

    • Expertise in best teaching practices (including theory, curriculum, instruction, and assessment)

    • Support and align teaching with the department vision, “Grand View’s Teacher Education Program empowers teachers, through vibrant learning communities and self-reflection, to be innovative, culturally responsive, and resourceful leaders who are empowered to respond to the dynamic needs of learners for a global society.”

    DESIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Candidates are preferred to have at least four years of successful teaching experience at the elementary level, with expertise in reading/literacy as a Reading Specialist or Dyslexia Specialist and knowledge of Science of Reading instructional practices and policies.

    • Active engagement in statewide or national advocacy, conferences, and scholarship in literacy, dyslexia, and/or the Science of Reading.

    • History of and passion for teaching, mentoring, and supervising pre-service professionals in order to sustain and improve a teacher education program with a strong commitment to preparing teacher candidates who are engaged to learn, equipped to teach, and empowered to lead.

    • Knowledge of InTASC standards, performance-based teacher preparation, assessment, and Common Core Curriculum is desired.

    • Prior successful teaching at the post-secondary level and supervision experience is desired.

    DUTIES: This position requires modeling of exemplary instructional skills, supervision of practicum students and student teachers in local schools, and commitment to the use of technology as part of innovative program delivery. Successful candidates should be committed to excellence and innovation in undergraduate teaching, active engagement in scholarly activities, and working closely with traditional and non-traditional students in a small college environment with a commitment to student success. Opportunities to teach graduate courses in the Master in Education program and courses in the general Liberal Arts Core Curriculum are available.
