    What you'll do

    This is entry-level to senior-level professional work teaching skilled and/or technical vocations such as building, industrial or mechanical trades, or business or service occupations to youth, of normal or impaired learning ability, in the custody of the Missouri Division of Youth Services.

    The following tasks are the responsibility of the Vocational Education Instructor:

    • Provide Awareness Supervision to youth, with responsibility for their safety, personal conduct, care, education, and therapy.
    • Maintain security, including intervention and/or participate fully in physical restraints of youth during emergencies or altercations to prevent escapes and gain physical control of youth.
    • Participates in the development and review of teaching aids and materials, and plans and prepares the course outline and content.
    • Supervises and instructs students in basic and advanced career or technical occupational skills (e.g., plumbing, welding, carpentry, auto mechanics, electrical wiring, metalworking, computer repair, food service, cosmetology, etc.).
    • Conducts formal instruction in the theories of career and technical occupations.
    • Prepares various types of equipment necessary for teaching sessions.
    • Prepares reports based on student attendance, performance, progress and skills assimilation.
    • Maintains equipment in good operating condition and in accordance with manufacturer’s safety standards.
    • Develops lesson plans, prepares pre-assessment evaluations and establishes learning objectives in accordance with program goals.
    • Teaches pro-social behavioral patterns conducive to success in an occupation, including safety, health, ethics, employability and related skills.
    • Role-model appropriate behaviors.
    • Possess intermediate knowledge of the skilled occupation in which instruction will be presented.
    • Possess introductory knowledge of the practical methods and techniques of conducting lectures and on-the job training in a craft, trade or occupational area.
    • Transport youth in everyday and emergency situations.
    • Perform other tasks as required.
    Knowledge, skills & abilities

    Knowledge of skilled or technical occupation in which instruction is presented. Ability to provide instruction in a state correctional, youth, and/or mental health facility.

    Qualifications

    Three or more years of experience and/or training in one of the building, industrial, or mechanical trades, or business or service occupation; possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency; and the ability to obtain (at the time of employment) an appropriate Temporary Authorization certificate (TAC), Initial Career Education Certificate (ICE), or Continuous Career Education Certificate (CCEC) issued by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

    Four or more years of experience as a Vocational Teacher with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System, or in a comparable teaching position in a formal vocational training program for career or technical occupations; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency; and the ability to obtain (at the time of employment) an appropriate Temporary Authorization certificate (TAC), Initial Career Education Certificate (ICE), or Continuous Career Education Certificate (CCEC) issued by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

    Special Requirement: Must possess a valid driver’s license
