    PRINCIPLE PURPOSE OF THE JOB: Teach first-year composition courses. 

    SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: Composition instructors teach 12 credit hours per semester, which includes responsibilities such as preparing for classes, reviewing, and developing curriculum, teaching methods, and assessments that contribute to the English department and the general education program of a Historically Black University. 

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

    • Conduct college-level composition courses, primarily in-person but possibly online.
    • Design and develop instructional materials, including syllabi, lesson plans, assignments, and assessments that align with the composition program guidelines and student learning competencies.
    • Engage students in class discussions, facilitate peer workshops, and promote collaborative learning environments that encourage active participation and critical thinking.
    • Assist students in developing effective writing strategies, including brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing.
    • Provide constructive feedback on students' written work, including essays, research papers, and other writing assignments.
    • Monitor and evaluate students' progress, maintaining accurate records of grades, attendance, and other relevant data, and provide timely feedback on their academic performance.
    • Connect students to appropriate campus resources and maintain accurate records of student progress.
    • Incorporate relevant writing topics, techniques, and technologies into the curriculum to enhance students' writing proficiency.
    • Collaborate with colleagues, attend departmental and institutional meetings, and actively participate in professional development activities that contribute to the overall improvement of the composition program and student success.

    OTHER DUTIES: Performs other related duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • A minimum of a master’s degree in English, Composition, Rhetoric, or a related field. A Ph.D. is preferred.
    • Prior experience teaching college-level composition courses is highly desirable. 

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Ability to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that respects diverse student backgrounds and promotes equity.
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with students, colleagues, and staff in a professional and respectful manner.
    • Organizational skills to manage course materials, assignments, grading, and administrative responsibilities efficiently.
    • Knowledge of composition theories, rhetorical strategies, and writing pedagogies is highly desirable.
    • Familiarity with current technologies, digital tools, and online platforms used in teaching writing is highly desirable.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: This position will not have supervisory responsibility.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
    • No or very limited physical effort is required.
    • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
