Instructor - English teaches courses in the discipline area of English. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being an Instructor - English provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Instructor - English typically reports to a department head. Has a Master's degree or is a PhD candidate in the applicable field. Has experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate level and possesses the qualifications to participate in research. ENGLISH INSTRUCTOR - Adjunct Pool

  • BATES TECHNICAL COLLEGE maintains a vacancy pool of qualified faculty interested in temporary teaching positions in the General Education Department. Adjunct (part-time) academic and basic skills faculty are responsible for preparing and providing instruction for students in the classroom. These faculty report to the dean of transfer and related instruction, or in some cases to the technical high school principal. This part-time position may become available at any time and is typically filled on a quarterly basis.

    Classroom instruction may be scheduled at Bates Downtown, Central Campus, or South Campus locations, as well as online.
     
    Currently we are recruiting faculty to fill positions to teach in the following area:
    English 
    90-level developmental college English reading and writing courses.
    100-level college applied English and communications courses.
    100-level generally transferable college English courses including English Composition I & II and Technical Writing. 


    Essential Duties 
    • Teach assigned courses and provide high quality instruction in a variety of delivery methods, including face to face, web-enhanced, hybrid, and online.
    • Adequately prepare all course materials and lessons.
    • Communicate effectively and professionally with a diverse population of colleagues and students.
    • Provide each student with clear course expectations, evaluations and timelines through carefully written topical outlines and approved standardized syllabus.
    • Support College student achievement practices, to ensure student retention, completion, and progression.
    • Provide interesting and relevant assignments for students that demonstrate learning outcomes in a real-life setting.
    • Respond to student questions on a timely basis.
    • Provide individual and small group instruction to students in both a classroom and lab setting.
    • Ensure that individual, lab, and small group instruction is based on best available education practices, meets standards for content, and is relevant to students’ vocational career training at the college.
    • Maintain student and curriculum records i.e. student progress and attendance, instructional syllabi, course curriculum and plans, and grades.
    • Effectively use available technology resources to enhance student access to knowledge and information, and effectively use technology to deliver instructional content.
    • Develop and/or maintain industry-based program accreditation, and ensure students are prepared for and have the opportunity to obtain relevant industry credentials and certifications. 
    • Deliver classroom management to maintain suitable learning environment by responding appropriately to student conduct/problems and aid in solving them in accordance with college procedures.
    • Provide budget management which includes requisition and maintenance control of and safeguard inventories of equipment and supplies assigned to the program.

    Non-Essential/Other Functions
    • Actively contribute to and participate in college-wide activities in support of regional accreditation and state and federal requirements. 
    • Support College student achievement practices to ensure student retention, completion, and progression. 
    • Participate actively and collaboratively with College Student Services and program advisory committees to support access to employment opportunities for students, and maintain student job placement records.
    • Accountable for keeping personal development up-to-date; adding to skills and knowledge through courses that may be available through the Bates Technical College courses, professional development committees, etc. 
    • Participate actively and collaboratively on committees for college as needed including but not limited to staff recruitment, college councils, etc.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    • This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position represented by Bates Technical College local union.
    • Following date of hire, all full-time faculty and all part-time faculty working two-thirds of a full-time load for more than three quarters (20 hours per week) must obtain Professional-Technical Education Certificate within 30 working days.

    Work Environment

    Minimum Qualifications 
    • Bachelor’s degree in a related subject area for teaching developmental English courses.
    • Master's degree in a related subject area for teaching college-level English courses.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Previous teaching, coaching, or instructional experience and/student teaching experience as part of an educational degree program.
    • Experience teaching at a two-year higher education institution.
