Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Instructor - English typically reports to a department head.     Yakima Valley College seeks an innovative English Instructor for the Yakima Campus, who is committed to community college students and their success.     This position is a full-time, special faculty (non-tenure track) position, with an anticipated start date of September 2024.

    JOB PROFILE: 

    • Provide instruction in a comprehensive English program with both day and evening offerings 
    • Implement and assess teaching methods intended to close achievement gaps between demographic groups.  
    • Demonstrate a commitment to systematic classroom, department, and college assessment and improvement  
    • Participate as an academic advisor in a Guided Pathways based advising system. 
    • Participate in college-wide registration and advising, and consultation with students outside of class through daily office hours.  
    • Prepare class materials.  
    • Participate in departmental and college curriculum planning.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

    • Earned Master's degree in English, Composition/Rhetoric OR a graduate degree in a related field that focuses on writing or literature from an accredited institution.  
    • Demonstrated successful experience teaching college composition. 

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

    • Practical experience in applying contemporary composition theory to teaching.  
    • A bachelor's degree and/or graduate work in a second discipline  
    • Experience teaching college-level technical writing.  
    • Background in teaching all levels of composition, from developmental to transfer level, literature, reading and/or ESL and ELL  
    • Experience or interest in curriculum development and assessment and outcome-based-learning.  
    • Successful experience advising students, developing course material and schedules. 
    • Successful community college teaching experience  
    • Experience in using a variety of student-centered and culturally responsive instructional/assessment techniques (e.g., labor/contract grading, flexible approaches to language, collaborative teaching and learning, interdisciplinary partnerships, portfolios, etc.). 
    • Understanding of and commitment to the community college philosophy and life-long-learning.
    • Experience or interest in teaching populations diverse in age, culture, and ethnicity. 
    • Experience in teaching multiple modalities, including hybrid and online courses.
    • Experience in creating equitable and antiracist assessments and learning environments.
