    General Summary
    Provides coordination, oversight, and administration of all activities of the Michigan Geological Survey in consultation with department leadership, state government, and the advisory council. Ensures that activities of the Michigan Geological Survey are carried out as directed in accordance with related legislation.

    Major Duties
    • Administers Michigan Geological Survey as an entity of the State at the University. Provides technical and administrative leadership, coordination, and supervision of department activities.
    • Applies for funding from relevant local, state, federal, private, and other sources.
    • Develops long-term plans for Michigan Geological Survey, expands current and develops new programs, secures funding and implements budgetary plans.
    • Attends relevant meetings for survey directors and other professionals.
    • Serves as a liaison between Michigan Geological Survey and relevant state agencies. Communicates activities with relevant University offices.
    • Conducts outreach, give public presentations of Michigan Geological Survey projects and results.
    • Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises staff.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Master’s degree in related field from an accredited institution.
    • Five years’ relevant experience.
    • Experience with geologic fundraising, including securing grants or contracts to support research.
    • Experience with professional publications, maps, project reports, or economic value reports.
    • Experience in managing staff that include professional geoscientists.
    • Ability to understand and support natural resources, energy, critical minerals, carbon sequestration, hydrogeology, and geomorphology compilation and research.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills.
    • Experience with public outreach and communication.

    Desired Qualifications
    • Doctoral degree with a research focus on geologic mapping, energy, critical minerals, hydrogeology, glacial geology or a similarly related field from an accredited institution.
    • Ten years’ relevant experience.
    • Experience submitting proposals to federal mapping grants.
    • Research, mapping, or geologic work in Michigan or the Great Lakes region.
    • Experience mentoring research staff and students.
    • Experience in developing and hosting symposia or technical sessions on Michigan Geology or related areas.
    • Experience in Michigan or other state legislative units.
    • Licensed Professional Geologist (LPG) or equivalent licensure or certification.
