    The Asheville Museum of History is seeking a Programs Manager with experience developing and implementing engaging educational programs for K-12, family, and adult audiences. The mission of the Asheville Museum of History is to preserve and promote the history and legacy of Western North Carolina through interpretation, education, collection, and collaboration. Operating in the Smith-McDowell House, an architecturally significant home built circa 1840, the Asheville Museum of History is a center of history education dedicated to interpreting the natural and cultural history of our region through exhibitions, collections, programs, and publications.

    Job Summary

    The Programs Manager develops, presents, evaluates, and supports engaging programming in a wide variety of formats interpreting the Museum's exhibits, collections, and other regional history topics for K-12, family, and adult audiences. The Programs Manager reports directly to the Museum’s Executive Director and also assists the Executive Director with the overall management of the organization.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of all educational programs, including school programs, community programs, and programs with outside partners
    • Performs independent research to create and prepare engaging programs based on current historiographical and educational discourse and the needs of the community
    • Participates directly in the preparation and execution of programming
    • Possesses a strong knowledge of the Museum’s interpretive subject matter and themes, in addition to a broad understanding of the regional history of Western North Carolina
    • Oversees bookings and sign ups for all programs and tours
    • Researches, develops, and writes grants to fund educational programs, in coordination with the Executive Director
    • Assists with social media posts and marketing for programs and events; creates website content for new programs, exhibits, and regional subject matter
    • Assists the Executive Director, Museum staff, and Museum partners with the development of new exhibits, traveling exhibits, and temporary exhibits based on educational needs of the community
    • Possesses the ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
    • Actively participates in creating a work environment that is supportive, respectful, welcoming, and collaborative
    • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in history, public history, museum studies, education, anthropology, or other related field, or equivalent (preferred candidates will possess a Master’s degree)
    • At least two years of experience working as an educator, interpreter, or historian in a museum, historic site, or school setting
    • Demonstrated success in the creation and implementation of educational programming on history and cultural subject matter
    • An understanding of the needs of different audiences, including children, adults, students of all ages, and underserved audiences
    • Strong oral and written communication skills as demonstrated in a professional setting
    • Working knowledge of technology including computer applications, video, and audio for creating online content and programs, in addition to website and social media content
    • US Citizen or must be legally authorized to work in the United States and be presently residing in the United States
    • Ability to work collaboratively with Museum staff, volunteers, trustees, and partners

    Salary & Work Schedule

    Starting annual salary range is $40,000 to $45,000, depending on education and experience. In addition to salary, the Programs Manager will also receive a healthcare and retirement stipend and is eligible for paid leave.

    This is a full-time position at 40 hours per week on a flexible work schedule, as needed for scheduled programming and events.
