Being an Instructor - History provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Instructor - History typically reports to a department head. Has a Master's degree or is a PhD candidate in the applicable field. Has experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate level and possesses the qualifications to participate in research.     The Department of History at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for a tenure-track, nine-month position at the rank of Assistant Professor, in the history of Africa, beginning August 2024. The period and region of specialization are open, but with preference for scholars whose work focuses on sub-Saharan Africa. The successful applicant will contribute to the department’s undergraduate and graduate curricula; this will include teaching an African history survey and either half of the World History surveys. We welcome candidates who can also contribute to one or more of the department’s other areas of emphasis, including Public History, Religious Studies, Classics, and Peace Studies. USU is an R1 university with a teaching mission, and so the department seeks a colleague who can show evidence of both scholarly productivity and teaching effectiveness. This is a research-focused position that typically has a teaching load of two courses per semester.  

    Responsibilities

    The successful candidate will be expected to:

    • produce high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship
    • teacheither half of the World History surveys 
    • teach an undergraduate African history survey
    • contribute to the department’s undergraduate and graduate curricula
    • contribute to service in the Department, College, and University

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications 

    • A PhD inAfrican History or related field by June 2024 (ABD will be considered at time of application if Degree is completed by June 2024) 
    • Evidence of scholarly productivity
    • Evidence of teaching effectiveness
    • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion

    Preferred Qualifications 

    • Specialization in sub-Saharan Africa
    • Ability to contribute toother units in the History Department, including the Global Peacebuilding Certificate, the Classics Program, or the Religious Studies Program.
