The high school English teacher’s responsibilities include planning lessons and developing curricula, reading and understanding all prescribed texts, offering academic support to students in regards to literature comprehension, writing skills and grammar understanding; in addition, communication with parents regarding students’ progress and ensuring a safe learning environment are necessary for professional success. Willing to teach English literature with a distinctly Adventist emphasis.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals, professional journals, with the ability to teach composition/research techniques and skills.

Duties and responsibilities

• Prepare lesson plans covering the whole year covering all subject matter relative to gaining a comprehensive knowledge of English literature, writing/grammar/research protocols, reading skills.


• Be competent and conversant with material presented from literature, poetry, reading, grammar and writing.


• To work with other teachers in and out of the department to promote optimal growth of students and good team skills in solving academic challenges faced on a day to day basis.


• Prepare assessment tools for use in evaluating students’ progress.


• To provide timely feedback to students and parents of students’ progress on a regular or as needed basis.


• To Provide for an informative, interesting and fun learning environment by staying current with current teaching techniques and models which help to ensure students interest and engagement with the learning process.


• To provide a learning environment that provides for a diversity of learning styles and abilities.


• Use the latest in technology to assist in the learning environment and classroom management.


• English teacher must be able to convey, transfer and share in an engaging way knowledge about literature, essay composition, grammar and poetry understanding and composition.

Supervisory responsibilities

Must be comfortable interacting with students, parents and colleagues and be able to respond with poise under stress. Must have a warm and friendly personality. Must be willing to train, mentor and supervise students, and also interact on a professional level with faculty and staff. Must be a team player and fit comfortably with the office atmosphere and philosophy of advocacy.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in English, literature or other related subject matter required


• Master’s degree preferred


• Teaching certificate from state and denomination completed, in progress or willingness to persue

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals, professional journals, with the ability to teach composition/research techniques and skills. .

Mathematical Skills

Ability to complete fundamental mathematics related to scoring, grading and computing test scores.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

Must be competent in using technology in classroom presentations and administration
