    About the Department
    The NC State Veterinary Hospital is an integrated health care center for companion, equine and farm animals. We exist to further the teaching mission of the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine and to provide state-of-the-art patient care. More than 30,000 patients are diagnosed and treated annually by the Veterinary Hospital. Established in 1983, the Veterinary Hospital is one of the highest rated regional academic medicalcenters in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states.

    • Expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students from the College of Veterinary Medicine.

    With over 20 clinical services staffed by board-certified specialists, many ofwhom are not only nationally but also internationally renowned, the Veterinary Hospital is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. The companion animal component of the NC State Veterinary Hospital provides state of the art, continuous care for elective, urgent (same day), and emergent cases, as well outpatients, through the hospital-based Emergency, Cardiology, Dermatology, Dentistry, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic and Soft Tissue Surgery, Behavioral Medicine, Theriogenology and Internal Medicine services.

    The Small Animal Internal Medicine Service is overseen by specialists with board certification in Small Animal Internal Medicine. The service has a busy and varied caseload and has a large volume of complex medicine cases. The service is supported by four clinical technician, ten residents and two small animal medicine focused interns, in addition to rotating interns and house officers from other services.
    Essential Job Duties
    Clinical duties: Major clinical responsibilities include providing high end specialized internal medicine, supporting the small animal internal medicine service, providing excellent service to referring veterinarians and clients, and providing outstanding house officer support. Emergency backup support of the residents may be expected during clinical rotations, with holiday coverage shared evenly among clinicians on the medicine service. The emergency service covers the majority of primary emergency duty, and our inpatient critical cases are supported by our critical care doctors. The person in this position would also be expected to provide consultations for in-house services and referring veterinarians and to develop a collegial relationship with other services within the hospital and with the local referring veterinarian population.

    Teaching: The person in this position would be expected to teach fourth year veterinary students and house officers in the clinical setting, which may include active learning on cases, small group rounds discussions. This person would attend and contribute to student rounds preparation and participate in regular medicine service faculty meetings.

    University/Community Outreach: The person in this position would be expected to develop positive relationships with veterinarians in the field to encourage growth of the service and caseload.
    Other Responsibilities
    Coordination with and participation in the Global Health Program (https://globalhealth.cvm.ncsu.edu/about/) is expected.
    Qualifications

    Minimum Education and Experience
    • DVM or equivalent degree. Candidate must have completed a residency training program in Small Animal Internal Medicine and either be board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) or be board eligible.
    • In addition, board certification or eligibility by the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine - Companion Animals (ECVIM-CA) will be considered in lieu of ACVIM credentials.
    • Eligibility for veterinary licensure (or faculty license) in North Carolina is also required.
    Other Required Qualifications
    • Candidate must have completed a residency training program in Small Animal Internal Medicine.
    • Ability to perform clinical duties as described for 39 weeks per year. While performing these duties, the candidate's primary responsibility will be:
      • Managing hospitalized patients
      • Seeing outpatients
      • Taking referrals
      • Providing consults
