    Position Summary:

    Instructor of Music/French horn. This is a full-time (9-month) position in the Department of Music within the College of Arts & Humanities. Instructor rank faculty are not eligible to earn tenure but do have opportunities for promotions. The anticipated start date for this position is August 5th, 2024.     Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    Teach applied French horn lessons.

    Direct brass ensembles and provide leadership for the French horn studio.

    Teach brass techniques course in the music education curriculum.

    Recruit and retain students for the French horn studio, band program and music department.

    Develop, teach, and assess undergraduate courses.

    Engage in continuous improvement of courses.

    Engage students in high-impact learning practices.

    Effectively advise and mentor students at the undergraduate level.

    Provide impactful departmental, college, university, and professional service to the university, community, and state.

    Engage in creative activities and scholarship, leading to invited performances and peer-reviewed publications.

    Additional duties and responsibilities assigned by the Department Head based on departmental needs and candidate strengths.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Exhibit musicianship on the French horn as a soloist and in collaborative settings.

    Ability and interest in recruiting and retaining talented undergraduate musicians.

    Teach, develop, and mentor undergraduate French horn students.

    Ability to contribute to classroom instruction in one or more areas: ear training, music theory, composition, music history, digital audio production, group piano, and music in the elementary classroom.

    Ability to fluently use education, office, and music software, as well as learning management platforms (i.e. Blackboard, Banner).

    Minimum Requirements:

    The applicant must have a master's degree in music.

    Demonstrated success in brass/French horn performance and instruction.

    Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Degree, cognate, or experience in one or more of the following areas:

    ear training

    music theory

    group piano

    elementary music education

    Experience teaching and providing leadership for a studio of French horn students.

    Experience teaching brass techniques to aspiring music educators.

    Evidence of success conducting various types of brass ensembles.

    Evidence of or potential for fostering an inclusive environment for diverse populations.

    Work Location, Environment, and Physical Demands:

    The candidate selected to fill this position will work on the Russellville campus of Arkansas Tech University in Witherspoon Hall.

    ATU will provide the employee with a computer, phone, and office.

    Required activities include: teaching and lecturing, sitting for extended periods, use of a keyboard and mouse, use of standard office equipment.

    Some local travel may be necessary for visits to public schools.

    The work schedule will include nights and weekends.
