NURSING INSTRUCTOR
Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Nursing Supervisor (Director of Staff Development), this position provides professional healthcare instruction to personnel and members of the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King (WVHK). The Nursing Instructor assesses, identifies, plans, implements, and evaluates educational programs including new employee orientation, nursing orientation(s), the electronic learning management (ELM) system, and staff directed education. Instructors function as a Primary Instructor for the Nurse Aide Trainee (NAT) program. Nursing Instructors plan educational offerings, presentation materials, develop and maintain nursing in-service policies and procedures, and disseminate educational information to designated staff. In addition, the Nursing Instructor acts as a resource for WVHK staff regarding policies, procedures, and nursing-related skills.
The position works with the Director of Staff Development to ensure that WVHK services meet or exceed Wisconsin Department of Quality Assurance and Centers for Disease Control standards. Nursing education is provided in accordance with the State Nurse Practice Act; American Nurses Association; Gerontological Nursing Standards; Federal, State and Veterans Administration regulations; and the mission, philosophy, policies, and procedures of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) and WVHK. Instruction methods for training include lesson plans, one-on-one instruction, lectures/discussion, video presentation, handout materials, hands on demonstration, and direct supervision of clinical practice.

45% A. Development and Provision of Orientation Programs for New Hires, Nursing Employees, and Facilitation of Continuing Education Programs and the ELM system.
A1. Collaborate with the Nursing Director on policies, procedures, and objectives, for orientation and educational programs for Nursing Services, present selected trainings to non-nursing staff according to regulation, upon request of other unit directors.
A2. Evaluate and acquire approved educational resource material, equipment, and speakers to meet program objectives.
A3. Develop complete lesson plans, including objectives and teaching outline, incorporating principles of adult learning.
A4. Develop and maintain annual training such as nursing skills and ELM system in accordance with regulatory standards, policies and procedures and best practice to promote high quality training.
A5. Operate all audio-visual programs and equipment necessary for training.
A6. Coordinate and conduct new hire, nursing classification specific training, and clinical orientations for nursing staff.
A7. Develop and provide orientation and educational material to all nursing personnel by means of adult learning principles using different methods of presentation including one to one instruction, lectures/discussion, video presentation, handouts, and hands on demonstration; provide individualized learning experience to meet employee needs for re-education purposes.
A8. Develop annual training plan and author educational programs for ELM; maintain records of completed ELM programs; assist supervisors in assuring staff is completing required courses.
A9. Maintain records of attendance, performance and evaluations for orientation and educational programs.
A10. Evaluate employee understanding and ability to perform learned material through a variety of testing methods.
25% B. Provision of Nurse Aide Trainee and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training
B1. Function as a Primary Instructor for WVHK’s Nurse Aide Trainee Program (NAT)
B2. Participate in the planning, conducting, and evaluating the NAT Program.
B3. Assist with preparation for biennial program survey.
B4. Provide oversight of program trainers who monitor NATs in classroom and when they are on the nursing units during clinical experiences.
B5. Verify the demonstrated competency in a task/skill, date and initial the Skills Checklist for Nursing Assistant Trainees.
B6. Complete post-orientation and NAT training performance evaluations
B7. Maintain instructor certification and function as a CPR instructor to designated staff for Basic Life Support, according to American Heart Association regulations and guidelines; maintain and update certification records.
20% C. Facilitation of the Development, Review, Dissemination and Training of WVH Nursing Quality Assurance Policies and Procedures
C1. Research nursing literature; review current best practices; interview and collaborate with staff within nursing services, other units, and other facilities to support that policies and procedures meet regulations of governing bodies and the needs of WVHK and its members and are compatible with or exceed current practice standards.
C2. Identify policies and procedures in need of revision and report to designee as appropriate.
C3. Develop and direct studies of nursing practice to identify areas of needed improvement.
C4. Develop and present education for all nursing staff to improve standards in identified problem areas.
C5. Conduct assessment/evaluation of staff performance on nursing units to determine educational needs.
C6. Develop and present training to improve quality of care.
C7. Ensure that written policies and procedures are accurate and thorough so that staff safety and quality care of the members are not compromised.
C8. Provide feedback on development of policies and procedures for care of members.
C9. Facilitate, plan, and implement policy and procedure in-services as directed.
10% D. Performance of Miscellaneous Duties
D1. Establish and maintain positive relationships with other sections which will facilitate quality service to members, set a positive example for other staff, and facilitate the efficient operation of the section and of nursing services.
D2. Participate in all mandatory in-service offerings.
D3. Participate in electronic charting auditing, monitoring, and education.
D4. Participate in computer-based educational training.
D5. Attend nursing services staff meetings.
D6. Participate in medical record maintenance by assisting with forms development and organization of data in the clinical record.
D7. Participate with colleagues in identifying and discussing ethical conflicts.
D8. Continue to develop in the professional nurse educator role through attendance at continuing education offerings, seminars, formal education, and experience with special projects or programs.
D9. Perform special projects as assigned.
D10. Actively participate, when appointed, as a chairperson or member of committees and work groups.
Special Requirements
· Must be Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Wisconsin or in a Nurse Licensure Compact member state
· Must have two years of experience in long-term care and/or education.
· Must hold or be eligible for certification with the State of Wisconsin, Department of Health Services, as a Nurse Aide Program Primary Instructor.
· Must hold or be eligible for certification as an instructor of CPR from an American Heart Association- and State of Wisconsin, Department of Health Services-approved provider.
Environmental Conditions
· Exposure to blood/body fluids as required for invasive procedures and treatments
· Exposure to microbial bacteria and other infectious agents inherent to care of ill/end of life members
· Exposure to chemical compounds of medication and treatments
