    POSITION REPORTS TO: Program Director, Social Work

    JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Program Director, Department of Social Work, faculty receive a contract or letter of appointment with a primary responsibility in teaching. Faculty members assess, plan, implement, and evaluate instruction for students in field and classroom settings in coordination with established course and program objectives.

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES:

    Teaching & Related Activities

    The primary responsibility of a faculty member is effective teaching. For details on classroom and field responsibilities – See USF Faculty Handbook.

    Faculty are expected to:

    • Teaches course load as specified in contract
    • Teaches courses consistent with the catalog description and curriculum maps
    • Teaches assigned classes at the scheduled time and place
    • Integrates evidence-based practice such that social work teaching is social work practice
    • Collaborates with colleagues for instructional improvement via professional peer review
    • Effectively communicates with Program Director
    • Maintains effective communication both verbally, in writing, and electronically with students, faculty, and field practicum instructors for use in assessment of students’ performance, coordination of field practicum experiences, and overall effectiveness of social work program
    • Submits reports and requests for information promptly
    • Role models Franciscan Values
    • Fulfills the Code of Ethics of the university and for the profession
    • Teaches students using appropriate methodologies to facilitate student classroom and field practicum learning experiences
    • Creates an effective learning environment for students
    • Facilitates critical reflection in students
    • Inspires confidence and support innovation in students
    • Provides timely feedback and fairly evaluate students’ progress
    • Evaluates student classroom and field practicum performance and provide individual counsel and guidance as necessary to promote student success
    • Proposes plans to improve students’ performance
    • Maintains appropriate records such as field practicum evaluations, anecdotal notes, and attendance on an ongoing basis to document evidence of student progress

    Student and Alumni Activities

    The primary responsibilities focus on recruiting and retention of students to the social work major and university. Those tasks include, but are not limited to:

    • Works effectively with students and field instructors to resolve student issues and concerns related to the Field Program
    • Participates in student recruitment and retention responsibilities
    • Provides academic, career, and professional academic advising

    Responsibilities may be adjusted for special assignments at the discretion of Program Director

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education

    • Master’s degree in social work from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program with a minimum of two years post-social work degree practice experience required

    Experience

    • Minimum of two years of post-master’s practice experience is required to teach social work practice courses.
    • Minimum of three years of prior teaching experience in a university setting preferred
    • Working knowledge and social network with professionals from urban and rural communities and human service organizations across multiple social work practice areas required

    Licensure/Certification

    • Current or eligible for social work license preferred.

    Knowledge and Skills

    • Competence in educational principles and techniques used in higher education classrooms and field practicum settings
    • Knowledge of the profession including social work history, generalist social work theory and practice, evidence-informed practice, professional ethics, cultural competence, and licensure regulations
    • Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, written and electronic) necessary to effectively interact with students, faculty, professional staff, administration, clinical affiliates, and the community
    • Analytical and organizational skills to plan, implement, and evaluate field practicum experiences and the field program
    • Interprofessional knowledge, values, and skills needed to build relationships with all constituencies with the Social Work Program, university, and community
    • Working with the field education software system in order to support the field practicum experiences.
