  • The department offers baccalaureate degrees in criminology and sociology and minors in anthropology and sociology. Program curricula reflect core interests in critical human inquiry and social analysis and social justice. Each program provides a strong foundation in theory and research while allowing students to tailor their coursework to their specific subject and career interests. Faculty prepare students to work in diverse occupations and to pursue professional or graduate studies in sociology, criminology, law or related disciplines.

    The department promotes research and teaching innovations that support student success through developing efficacy and purpose. Students apply knowledge and skills to “real world” problems and learn how to engage stakeholders and mobilize community members to organize and facilitate meaningful social change. Faculty comprise an active community of scholars and educators committed to the university’s mission and guiding principles that place emphasis on developing students in ways that enable them to use their education to serve the public good and improve the health and well-being of their communities. Transformational learning experiences in courses like the Inside Out Prison Exchange program and internships empower students and prepare them to navigate life and work in a rapidly changing global environmentThis tenure-track nine-month position (with summer teaching possibly available) involves teaching an assigned sociology course load; serving as faculty mentor/advisor for sociology/criminology majors, engaging in professional scholarly activity, and participating in department, college, and university level service. The standard teaching load is 12 credits per semester. The person hired for the position is expected to support the Center for Integrated Health and Human Inquiry through participation in curricular integration, cross-disciplinary collaboration in teaching and scholarship, and creation of experiential learning activities and community partnerships that involve students in meaningful projects that integrate interests in health and human inquiry.

    Primary Duties

    Teaching baccalaureate-level courses in criminology and sociology in accordance with the needs of the department. Teaching responsibilities include: preparing and presenting course materials, including course updates and revisions; evaluating student outcomes and participating in student retention efforts; selecting and ordering texts/readings/resources; preparing, administering and grading assignments; utilizing the learning management system; and assigning final grades. Responsibilities also include proposing curriculum changes and program modifications to the Department Chair and supporting the Center for Integrated Health and Human Inquiry as mentioned in the Job Summary Statement.

    Building and maintaining a focused research agenda which includes but is not limited to presenting scholarship at professional conferences, conducting research, and publishing work in peer-reviewed publications. Research activity may also involve grant writing and securing grant funding for research projects.

    Mentoring and advising students; participating in student recruitment and retention activities; contributing to program assessment and development and curriculum review and revision; serving on department committees and college and university committees or boards; performing other duties, as required. Service activity may also include community involvement, consulting in areas of teaching/research expertise and discipline-relevant or related professional service.

    Salary Range
    $58,000 - $60,000 Minimum Qualifications
    • Ph.D. in Sociology with an emphasis in criminology or similar area or related discipline or ABD with anticipated completion by August 2024 in Sociology with an emphasis in criminology or related discipline
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Ph.D. in Sociology with emphasis in one or more of the following areas: crime and deviance, policing, courts, corrections, and inequalities
    • Teaching expertise, especially in the areas of theory, methods, criminology, inequalities & social justice
    • Experience in mentoring/advising undergraduates 
    • Expertise in online and blended instruction 
    • Demonstrated ability to initiate and maintain a program of scholarship and publication. 
    • Discipline-relevant service experience in community or educational setting
    • Experience in course and/or curriculum development 
    • Experience with and a commitment to working with diverse student populations and a commitment to equity in education at all levels
