    The Department

    The Department of Sociology provides a rigorous education leading to a BA degree or a minor in the field. The major consists of required core courses (sociological theory, research methods, statistics, sociological experience, senior capstone) and diverse electives. The Department emphasizes high-quality undergraduate teaching, advising, scholarship, and service to the community and the university.

    The Department of Sociology is housed within the School of Social Sciences. The department consists of seven full-time faculty and several lecturers. All sociology faculty are active within their areas of expertise and related professional communities.

    Duties of the Position

    The Department of Sociology anticipates hiring temporary part-time lecturers to teach sociology courses in one or more of the following areas: 

    • core courses, including introduction to sociology, sociological research methods, statistics, sociological theory, career planning, and senior seminar
    • topics courses, including race & ethnicity, self & society, social problems, social psychology, inequality & institutions, religion, art, emotions, environment, globalization, immigration, deviance, drugs, socialization, social interaction, aging, media, death & dying, mental health & illness, sexualities, political sociology, consumption, poverty & inequality, reproduction, childhood & adolescence, gender, families, urban, political sociology, power, education, health care & illness, demography, culture, social movements, social work & social welfare, work, organizations, social policy, stratification, and science & technology
    • courses in additional areas of sociological specialization

    Expectations of lecturers include the following:

    • teach courses that follow department requirements for course format/content, as well as that follow university course requirements
    • hold posted office hours of one (1) hour per week per course
    • participate in program assessment data collection as requested and required
    • utilize SSU's online learning management system and other educational technology as appropriate for teaching and program assessment purposes
    • respond to student needs in an equitable, timely, and appropriate manner
    • equitably promote student belonging, engagement, and success

    Professional Qualifications

    To be recommended for appointment, a candidate must have an MA/MS in sociology or a related field and at least one term of teaching experience. A PhD or PhD candidacy in sociology or a related field and recent extensive undergraduate teaching experience are preferred.

    Rank and Salary

    Full-time is a 15-unit workload per semester. Actual salary is dependent upon the number of units assigned, educational preparation, and availability of funds subject to any CSU system faculty contract salary increases.

    • Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.
    • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $4,530 - $6,056 per full-time month.
    • The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salary range indicated above is prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
    • Selection as a candidate in the applicant pool, does not guarantee employment. Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon department needs and funding.
    • Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis.
    • Relocation expenses will not be provided for temporary faculty appointments.
    • Expenses incurred to attend an interview for temporary faculty positions are not reimbursed by the University.

    • Temporary Faculty with three-year contracts do not need to reapply.
    • Temporary Faculty who had a paid appointment during the prior academic year with your department (either one or both semesters); this includes Lecturers on the Re-Employment list are not required to apply through the Recruitment Pool unless they would like to be evaluated to teach additional courses, not currently designated as qualified to teach.
