    The Instrument Technician, Ferndale Refinery is responsible for the installation, calibration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of field instruments at the Ferndale Refinery. Field instruments include various process transmitters, switches, analyzers, controllers, positioners, automated valves, etc. The majority of the work is outdoors in an industrial environment. The incumbent must possess the fitness and ability to perform the tasks responsibly under normal supervision.

    Responsibilities May Include:
    Following all refinery safe practices and procedures

    Performing Job Safety Analysis as required

    Troubleshooting, repairing, calibrating, and performing other maintenance tasks on field instrumentation, including but not limited to, pneumatic and electronic transmitters, switches, controllers, positioners, and automated valves

    Troubleshooting, repairing, calibrating, and performing other maintenance tasks on process analyzers and sample systems, including but not limited to, gas chromatographs, continuous emission monitoring systems, oxygen, conductivity, pH, and tail gas analyzers

    Troubleshooting, repairing, and performing other maintenance tasks on vibration and temperature monitoring systems for rotating equipment

    Configuring, installing, performing loop checks, and commissioning new instrumentation associated with maintenance activities

    Installing instrument tubing and tubing fitting systems per manufacturer's specifications

    Working with operations and process controls team to troubleshoot instruments and signal wiring controlled by distributed controls systems and programmable logic controllers

    Utilizing test equipment, such as multi-meters, temperature and pressure calibrators, communicators, and signal generators

    Researching and retrieving equipment information, refinery equipment files, and communication with vendors

    Reading and interpreting loop drawings, P&IDs, wiring schematics, cause/effects, data sheets, etc

    Using computers and software applications to enter and retrieve data

    Performing diagnostic testing, isolation, terminations, and/or energized work on instrument wiring up to 125V in compliance with the refinery's electrical safety program

    Performing work activities that include pulling, lifting, twisting, working in confined spaces and on elevated platforms requiring fall protection

    Operating mobile equipment

    Required Qualifications:
    Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions

    High school diploma or GED

    Valid driver's license

    At least 18 years of age

    Associate’s degree in Instrument Technology or graduate from a two-year certificate program in Instrument Technology from an accredited technical school

    Working experience with hand tools including multi-meters, communicators, and other test equipment

    Experience with basic shop mathematics and material dimensions including pipe sizes and schedules, alloy material awareness and use

    Experience with creating sketches and interpreting P&IDs and other electrical drawings

    Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic

    Willingness to perform/comply with the following, with or without reasonable accommodation:

    Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends and holidays

    Be on call and respond to refinery emergencies during off-hours

    Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines

    Climb structures up to 200 feet in height using stairs and ladders.

    Transport articles up to 50 pounds

    Work around toxic chemicals, including acids and bases

    Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat

    Work in enclosed spaces such as tanks and silos

    Work outside in harsh weather conditions

    Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)

    Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Two or more years of experience working as an instrument technician in an industrial environment.

    Experience working on tank gauging systems, vibration monitoring systems, or analyzers

    Experience with SAP's Maintenance Module or other ERP Maintenance modules

    Knowledge of applicable codes and standards including NEC

    Able to work independently, using manuals and other information to troubleshoot and improve understanding of equipment

    Able to identify and evaluate problems including approach, possible alternative solutions, and conclusions

    Able to effectively interact with all organizational levels and value inclusion and diversity

    Effective verbal communication with others including providing clear explanations, active listening, and asking questions as appropriate

    Strong and effective communication skills (written and verbal) in both individual and group settings

    Effective written communication skills pertaining to documenting inspection and repair information

    Proficient in MS Office

    Knowledge of safe work practices

    The Ferndale Refinery is located on Puget Sound in Ferndale, Washington, approximately 20 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border. Facilities include crude distillation, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation and hydrodesulfurization units. It processes a variety crude oils, including Alaskan North Slope, Canadian and other foreign and U.S. shale crudes, primarily delivered via marine vessel and pipeline. Within the refinery is a rail car crude oil receiving facility with a capacity of 30,000 BPD. This offloading facility makes the receipt of additional crude by rail car possible. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include residual fuel oil, which is supplied to the northwest marine bunker fuel market. Most refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline and barge to major markets in the northwestern United States.

    Compensation

    Pay for this position is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Currently, the pay rate for a Journeyman is $50.65 per hour with a 7.5% annual bonus target (VCIP). This is scheduled to increase to $52.42 per hour in February 2025. Trainee Maintenance Mechanic rates start at $37.85 per hour. This position is not eligible for relocation assistance. This position is on a 4/10 work schedule.
