Arts Research Integration Graduate Research Fellow

    Interns will participate in a full range of professional staff activities. They will have the opportunity to conceptualize and write for gallery installations and exhibitions when the exhibition schedule allows. All interns will assist with a variety of departmental duties in order to gain broad understanding of museum operations, including attending various staff meetings and assisting at the visitor services desk.

    Arts Research Integration:
    With the Arts Research Integration program, the Spencer Museum of Art (SMA) at the University of Kansas (KU) proposes to transform the art museum into an active hub for collaborative research between the arts and other disciplines. Research generated by the initiative will foster reciprocal exchange and the production of knowledge driven by scholars from multiple disciplines. By providing opportunities for motivated KU students and faculty to participate in deeper and more sustained interactions with the Museum, ARI will deepen engagement with university audiences and collaborators.

    Job Description

    The Spencer Museum of Art (SMA) is seeking a full-time KU graduate student to serve a one-year term (11-month appointment) as a Graduate Research Fellow during the 2024-25 academic year in conjunction with Arts Research Integration (ARI). The ARI Graduate Research Fellow will work with SMA academic staff on research projects that develop through a collaborative exchange of ideas, integrate different disciplinary methods, and connect with the goals and/or resources of the art museum. For this Graduate Fellow, the Museum specifically seeks a candidate with interest in exhibition development and publication management and editing. Areas of focus will include organizing artistic and scholarly content that examines access to land, water, air, and fire for an exhibition, publication, and programming scheduled for 2026. Other overlapping projects will also be in different stages of development and archiving.

    Duties
    • The ARI Graduate Research Fellow will contribute to the development and promotion of a collaborative, interdisciplinary research culture at the Museum and KU.
    • Collaborate with SMA academic staff and may work with faculty and undergraduate research fellows.
    • Opportunity to work with invited creative specialists and/or visiting scholars in conjunction with the project.
    • Give a presentation to Museum and KU audiences.
    • Contribute to the Museum’s online research platform in the form of blog entries, video, images, white papers and the like, depending on the research project and process.

    Required Qualifications

    • Must be a University of Kansas graduate student seeking a master's or Ph.D. degree.
    • Enrolled in six credit hours of graduate coursework or at least one hour of thesis/dissertation (approval form from graduate program required).
    • Strong spoken and written communication as evidenced by application materials and interview.
    • Demonstrated computer competency (Office, Outlook, databases, web skills).
    • Strong writing and editing skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with museum staff, university faculty, and students.
    • Familiarity in the visual arts and/or research that integrates the arts.
    • Experience with collaborative interdisciplinary research across the arts, humanities, sciences, or social sciences.
    • Willingness to engage with ideas beyond one’s field of expertise.
    • Flexibility, creativity, and initiative.
    • Demonstrated interest in multiple or interdisciplinary fields of inquiry.
    • Must have a flexible schedule and be available to work weekends and after hours if needed.
    • Acceptance of Federal Work Study (for eligibility please fill out a FAFSA form through the KU Financial Aid Office).

    Additional Information:
    • This position is an hourly, approximately 20 hours/week, position for 24, 2-week pay periods.
    • This position is an 11 month (24 pay periods) appointment beginning August 8, 2022 and ending July 7, 2023.
